2023 AFL Brownlow Round 13 Overview
Round 12 was the first of the bye rounds in the AFL and it certainly threw up a couple of interesting results that has affected the Brownlow betting market on Betfair.
Nick Daicos has shortened right up again in Brownlow favouritism after another strong game for the Pies. After a quiet month or so, he's polled strongly in the last two games to extend his lead on our Brownlow leaderboard. Marcus Bontempelli is on the drift from second favourite as the Bulldogs star looks to be playing a bit sore. It's likely that a number of players have jumped ahead of him in the count, including Christian Petracca, Zac Butters and Tim Taranto who are all likely to poll well in Round 12. Jordan Dawson, Zach Merrett and Noah Anderson are the other notables to poll in Round 12.

Sydney 9.12.66 def by St Kilda 12.8.80
It was an ugly game early but the Saints got the better of the Swans to cement their spot in the top eight. Rowan Marshall (16 disposals, 7 tackles, 50 hitouts) was dominant in the ruck, with Brad Crouch (33 disposals, 8 tackles), Jack Sinclair (32 disposals, 7 clearances) and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (30 disposals, 9 marks, 1 goal) winning plenty of ball. Mitch Owens (21 disposals, 8 marks, 2 goal) was dynamic up forward, while Callum Wilkie (23 disposals, 8 marks) patrolled at half-back. Oli Florent was best for the Swans with 34 disposals and 6 marks.

Western Bulldogs 13.7.85 def by Port Adelaide 16.11.107
A cracking Friday night clash saw the Power confirm their premiership credentials against the Bulldogs. Zak Butters is emerging as a real Brownlow contender as he's jumped to the top of our Brownlow Leaderboard after picking up votes again here with 31 disposals, 5 tackles, 6 clearances and a goal. Travis Boak (26 disposals) and Connor Rozee (23 disposals, 7 tackles, 1 goal) were influential, while Scott Lycett (11 disposals, 43 hitouts) did a superb job out-muscling Tim English in the ruck. Tom Liberatore (33 disposals, 5 tackles, 11 clearances) and Adam Treloar (34 disposals, 5 clearances, 1 goal) were excellent for the Dogs.

Hawthorn 15.8.98 def Brisbane 11.7.73
Huge upset at the MCG as the Hawks rolled the Lions to dent their top four aspirations. Skipper James Sicily (32 disposals, 12 marks) was again inspirational, with Connor Macdonald (28 disposals, 2 goals), Jai Newcombe (28 disposals), Dylan Moore (25 disposals, 2 goals) and Jarman Impey (28 disposals) all valuable contributors. Josh Dunkley (28 disposals, 7 marks, 11 tackles, 8 clearances, 1 goal) and Lachie Neale (30 disposals) were stand outs for the Lions. Brownlow votes could go a number of different ways here.

Adelaide kicked the biggest score of the season and the three Brownlow votes will be an easy one to decide after Taylor Walker kicked a bag of 10 goals from his 21 disposals and 11 marks. Rory Laird (34 disposals, 6 tackles, 13 clearances), Jordan Dawson (32 disposals, 6 tackles) and Ben Keays (29 disposals, 1 goal) should fight it out for the minor votes.

Fremantle 10.10.70 def by Richmond 12.13.85
A crucial clash saw the Tigers land an important away win to keep their glimmer of hope alive for finals action. Shai Bolton was sublime with 33 disposals, including 14 in the final quarter, 6 clearances and the match-winning goal. Tim Taranto (35 disposals, 7 tackles, 7 clearances, 2 goals) continued his great form, while Nick Vlastuin (26 disposals, 12 marks) and Jayden Short (20 disposals, 3 goals) were also valuable. Caleb Serong (31 disposals, 6 tackles, 9 clearances) and Andrew Brayshaw (29 disposals, 1 goal) were best for Freo.

North Melbourne 11.9.75 GWS Giants 15.13.103
The Joeys were competitive enough but ran out of legs against the Giants in the end. Toby Greene stood tall when the Giants needed it with 24 disposals and 3 goals, while Kieran Briggs (16 disposals, 7 tackles, 8 clearances, 20 hitouts), Callan Ward (26 disposals, 1 goal) and Stephen Coniglio (25 disposals, 6 tackles, 7 clearances) were also important in the win. George Wardlaw was a deserving Rising Star nominee after his 22 disposals, 9 tackles, 6 clearances and a goal, while Tarryn Thomas was good with 19 disposals and 3 goals.

Carlton 6.16.52 def by Essendon 13.8.86
Carlton are in a world of pain right now while Essendon march on towards September action. Nic Martin (30 disposals, 9 marks, 7 clearances) was superb, while Jye Caldwell (25 disposals, 6 tackles, 1 goal) and Ben Hobbs (24 disposals) stood up in the midfield with Zach Merrett well held. Peter Wright returned with a bang with 5 goals from 8 disposals and 7 marks. Adam Cerra (31 disposals) tried hard for the Blues while Sam Walsh had 35 disposals but wasn’t particularly influential.

Melbourne 8.18.66 def Collingwood 9.8.62
It was a King’s Birthday classic as Melbourne held off a fast-finishing Collingwood to claim a great victory in a potential Grand Final preview. Jack Viney won the Neale Daniher Medal for his 32 disposals, 11 tackles, 9 clearances and a goal. Christian Petracca (28 disposals, 7 tackles, 6 clearances) and Lachie Hunter (28 disposals, 8 marks) were also very good in the middle, while Steven May (18 disposals, 7 marks) was a rock at half-back. Jack Crisp (28 disposals, 11 tackles, 1 goal) and Tom Mitchell (30 disposals, 10 tackles) led the way at the coalface for the Pies.

For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote predictor system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can then form a 'range' for each player (i.e. a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.
