The 2019 Formula 1 season continues this weekend as we head to the Circuit of the Americas in Texas for the annual United States Grand Prix!
As usual, we have a full preview and betting tips for the race, which will get underway at around 6am on Monday morning for Australian fans!
It was a fantastic weekend for Lewis Hamilton in Mexico as he picked up his 10th win of the season and moved even further ahead on top of the drivers’ standings. The Brit now sits 74 points clear of his teammate, Valtteri Bottas, atop the table with a maximum of just 78 points left in the 2019 season. This means that if Bottas wins in Texas, Hamilton will need only finish 8th or better to secure his sixth drivers’ championship title.
The resurgence of German star Sebastian Vettel continued in Mexico as the Ferrari driver finished second to Hamilton. He has now finished on the podium in three of the last four races, with his only miss being a forced retirement in the Russian Grand Prix a few weeks ago. Vettel overtook Max Verstappen in the drivers’ standings and now sits just six points behind teammate Charles Leclerc, both of whom failed to finish on the podium in Mexico.
The Circuit of the Americas (COTA) was built in 2010 and was the first in the United States to be purpose built for the Formula 1. It is just over 5.5km long, with the lap record being held by Lewis Hamilton at just over 1 minute and 37 seconds.
COTA has been described by drivers as a fun track to race on. It has long and fast straights and slow, tight corners. There are multiple paces to overtake at COTA which usually makes for a good viewing experience for fans both watching on TV and packed into the 120,000 seat stadium.
We have steered clear of Lewis Hamilton over the past few events and opted to hunt a bit more value. However, it’s extremely hard to look past the Brit this weekend. Hamilton has had an absolute stranglehold on the event since it was reintroduced to the F1 circuit in 2012. Over that seven year period, the Mercedes driver has picked up five wins and has a total of six victories in the U.S. Grand Prix when you add his win from back in 2007.
The Circuit of the Americas is one of Hamilton’s favourite tracks and with the drivers’ championship on the line this weekend, we think he is great value at around $2.75.
