Our hot run of betting form in the Formula 1 season nearly continued last weekend as we tipped Sebastian Vettel at monster odds of $13 to win the Monaco Grand Prix. The German finished in 2nd place behind only Lewis Hamilton to deny what would have been a big win.
The 2019 Formaula 1 season continues this weekend as we head to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal for the annual Canadian Grand Prix! Check out our preview and betting tips for the event below.
F1 Canadian Grand Prix Betting Tips
Lewis Hamilton picked up his fourth win of the season in Monaco and maintained team Mercedes streak to start the season. Hamilton and teammate Valtteri Bottas have now won all six races so far this year, the first five of which resulted in a Mercedes 1-2 finish.
German Sebastian Vettel had his best race of the year so far in Monaco, finishing second on the tight street circuit to move into 3rd in the 2019 drivers’ championship standings. The top six in the standings is made up of the Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull drivers with Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Pierre Gasly in fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
The Track
The Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve will present a similar challenge to the one drivers faced in Monaco. It is another tight street circuit where drivers will have to be millimetre perfect throughout the race. Once again, there are limited opportunities to pass, so securing a strong position on the grid in qualifying will be absolutely crucial.
Maclaren F1 driver, Carlos Sainz Jr, who currently sits seventh on the drivers championship standings, describes the track as a constant learning process.
"It’s certainly a different circuit, quite similar to Melbourne in a way, as it’s a mix of a street and a permanent track. The circuit is usually dirty with leaves and even wildlife during the early parts of the weekend and that makes it a bit of a challenge to get up to speed. I quite like the section between Turns 4, 5, 6 and 7. The walls are close and you have to find the rhythm through there to get it right and ride over the kerbs."
Prediction
Lewis Hamilton is a six time winner of the Canadian Grand Prix and can tie the record of Michael Schumacher with another win this weekend. He starts as firm favourite at around $2.00 at most outlets and it’s hard to bet against him. He has had a strangle hold on the Canadian Grand Prix over the last decade and has won three of the last four races there.
The Englishman is in fantastic form this season and looks to be really gunning for Schumacher’s crown as the greatest of all time. We have opted for value over tipping the obvious choice in Lewis Hamilton every week so far this season but we are siding with the favourite here.
Lewis Hamilton to win
$2.10
For a placing, we absolutely love the value of German Sebastian Vettel in Canada. The Ferrari driver seemed to find some form last weekend in Monaco and the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve offers a similar type street circuit challenge that should be able to help keep the slower Ferrari in the hunt.
Vettel has won the event on two occasions and is the defending champion after winning in dominant fashion last season.
Sebastian Vettel podium finish
