2017-18 A-League: Round 8 Preview & Betting Tips

November 23rd 2017, 5:07pm, By: Andy Rosos

A-League Betting Tips

Big weekend in the A-League coming up with the action kicking off on Thursday night. We take a look at some of the key games of Week 8 and give our betting tips below.

A-League Week 8 Betting Tips

Newcastle Jets vs Melbourne Victory (Thursday 7.50pm AEDT)

Melbourne claimed their first victory of the season last weekend to move into the top six with seven points through seven games. Newcastle were beaten by Sydney FC but still have a great record, sitting 2nd on the table with 14 points through their seven games.

Newcastle have been one of the higher scoring teams in the league, already accruing a league best +8 goal difference through their 4-2-1 record while Sydney’s defence has been as solid as ever, conceding just seven goals.

Melbourne are undefeated through their last five matches against the Jets with three wins and two draws, however, Newcastle looks to be a revitalised side this season with an attacking mindset. Melbourne have been defensive through their opening games, picking up four draws already, we think away from home they should play pretty safely again and another draw could be the best bet here.

TIP: Draw - $3.50 at Sportsbet

Melbourne City vs Perth Glory (Friday 7.50pm AEDT)

Melbourne City suffered their 2nd loss of the year last weekend as they went down 3-1 to Brisbane away from home. Perth Glory also lost, slipping out of the top six in the process and have now lost the most games of any team in the league with 4.

Melbourne City will welcome the return to AAMI Stadium here after a difficult trip to Brisbane and should be buoyed by the potential return of striker Tim Cahill after his stint playing for the Socceroos. Perth have scored just eight goals so far this season and have looked shaky going forward, contrasting the stellar season strikers Andy Keogh and Adam Taggart had last year.

Perth are undefeated in their last four games agasint Melbourne City, with three wins and one draw. Historically, the two teams have been two of the higher scoring sides in the A-League, even if Perth have been down on form this season. There have been 17 goals scored in the last three games between these two clubs and we expect this one to be another high scoring contest.

TIP: Total goals OVER 3.5 - $2.42 at Ladbrokes

Sydney FC vs Brisbane Roar (Saturday 7.50pm AEDT)

The Sydney FC train got back on track last weekend after falling to the Central Coast Mariners back in Week 6 be defeating the Jets 2-1 at home. They’ll get another home game here as they face the Roar at Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday night. The Roar secured their first win of the season on the weekend, taking out Melbourne City 3-1 as Avraam Papadopoulos scored two goals.

Sydney FC are still a dominant team at home, going undefeated through their first four games there with a +4 goal difference. Should be a tough task for Brisbane but they’ll have the advantage of Sydney having played in the FFA Cup final through the week.

Five of the last 10 games between these two clubs have ended in a draw, with the Sky Blues winning three of the remaining five games. Sydney will be hunting their 20th consecutive game at home without a loss and we expect them to get it here at odds of $1.50.

TIP: Sydney to win - $1.50 at Sportsbet
