PGA Tour The Sentry Betting Tips
Kapalua, Hawaii, Thursday 4th - 7th January
As it has done for the past few years, the PGA Tour will bring in the new year with The Sentry from Hawaii. This year, however, things are a little different as the event also marks the official start to the PGA Tour season, unlike in previous years. Players who won a tournament or finished in the top 50 of the FedEx Cup standings in the 2023 season will be invted to compete at Kapalua, meaning the field is absolutely jam packed full of talent.
The Field
The field for this week is 59 players strong and boasts the majority of the top players in the world (excluding those on the LIV Tour, of course). Jon Rahm won the tournament last season but will be one of the notable absentees after signing his LIV Golf contract a few weeks ago. Heading the betting markets will be Scottie Scheffler, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Aberg, Colin Morikawa, Max Homa, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay and Jordan Spieth.
Former winners of The Sentry who will be looking to add another trophy to the case this week include Harris English, Justin Thomas, Schauffele and Spieth. First time tour winners who earned their way in with a debut win last season include Nico Echavarria, Kurt Kitayama, Taylor Moore, Matt Wallace, Davis Riley and Nick Hardy, Wyndham Clark, Vincent Norrman, Akshay Bhatia, Lee Hodges and Sahith Theegala.
The Course
At almost 7,600 yards as a Par 73, the course is one of the longest on the PGA Tour, and opened in 1991 as the debut design from iconic duo Bill Core and Bill Crensaw. While it is long, PGA Tour players of the modern age have no issue scoring here, with the winning score being in the 20s under par in seven of the last eight events.
We'll be targeting strong ball strikers in Hawaii this week, as that type of player has generally faired well there over teh past few years, with Rahm, Thomas, Schauffele and Dustin Johnson being among the recent winners.
Betting Tips
Colin Morikawa ($15/Top 10 $2.30 at Betfair)
Morikawa is back for revenge this year after blowing a six shot lead heading into the final round of The Sentry. He has competed in The Sentry for the past four years and his finishes read 7th, 7th, 5th and 2nd.
Eric Cole ($67/Top 20 $2.30 at Betfair)
For a bit more value this week I love the look of Eric Cole. Finished the 2023 PGA Tour season in a huge flurry with a T3 at the Shriners, T2 at the ZOZO and a T3 at the RSM. Played in a whopping 37 events last season for 27 cuts made and 14 finishes inside the top 25.
