GWS vs Geelong Prediction & Betting Tips: AFL 2026 Round 18

Up & Down Again

The Giants up and down season hit one of its greatest peaks, ending Fremantle's 14 game winning streak with a 21 point win in Canberra. Jake Stringer produced a match winning performance with seven goals, while Clayton Oliver (32 disposals) and Finn Callaghan (30) led the way through the midfield. The Giants midfield got to work recording +14 clearances and +12 contested possessions, which led to a +15 advantage in the inside 50 battle. GWS’ strength this season has been their work in the groundball game, where they rank 1st in the AFL for post clearance ground ball gets and 3rd for post clearance contested possessions.

Searching For Form

Geelong have hit a rough patch of form, losing four of their last five games. In Geelong’s defence three of those four losses have come against Fremantle away, Adelaide away and Brisbane. The Cats produced a stunning comeback to nearly run over the top of Brisbane after trailing by 43 points in their first quarter, however their defence was exposed in a manner we’ve rarely seen before. Brisbane scored 8 goals from their first 11 inside 50’s, as they made Geelong’s defence look second rate. The Cats also conceded 83 points from turnover last week, an area they will need to improve on if they are to end their slide.

Recent Head to Head History

The Giants have been one of the few teams that have had the wood over Geelong, winning four of their last five games against the Cats. Western Sydney hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the Cats, with Geelong’s last win at Engie Stadium coming back in 2014.

Giants or Cats? Here’s Our GWS vs Geelong Tip

Current form and recent head to head history leads towards the Giants, however given their inconsistency it’s hard to have much faith in GWS. If the Cats can nullify GWS’ ground ball game, it will go a long way towards them winning this match. Geelong have had some close defeats to strong opposition, and they will lift for this match given the potential consequence of being outside of the top 8 at the end of the round if they lose.

Geelong rank 3rd in the AFL for scores from stoppage and 4th for scores from turnover, they are the fourth highest scoring team in the competition, and their attacking potency will be the key to get them across the line. The Giants are 4-5 across their last nine games, however their losses have all been in competitive showings, with the five defeats coming by under 21 points. Geelong bounces back with a narrow win.
