Wimbledon Day 3 Betting Tips

Nicolas Mejia vs Michael Zheng

Approx. Wednesday 10pm AEST

I feel like this is a bit of a battle of contrasting round 1 results. On one hand, we have Michael Zheng, the US college sensation, who was able to get over the line in five sets against home hope Cam Norrie. He played 5 sets with a player with a decent amount of form and experience on grass over the years, and only dropped serve once in 27 service games, including the last 25 in a row. He also didn't face a break point for the last three sets. Whilst the scoreboard looked close, Zheng did an exceptional job at looking after his own serve. Were it not for poor break point conversion (Zheng converted 4/13), I'd say Zheng could have won more comfortably.

To me, Mejia vs Vallejo was one of the more below-par round 1 matches across both the men's and women's draws. And to be honest, it was a little disappointing from both players. 33 break points in a 4-set match between the pair, with Mejia getting over the line in a 4th set tiebreak. It is also worth noting Vallejo was not at his best physically late in the match, and still kept things close. While the Mejia win over Schoolkate in qualifying did grab my attention, any goodwill gained from that win disappeared in that match with Vallejo.

Ultimately, on grass, I struggle to give Mejia the edge, or even break even, in enough areas to genuinely entertain him here in any capacity. I have this one handicapped at -6.5/7 here for Zheng, so to be able to jump over a key number and be able to step into the -5.5 games on the American is incredibly solid. If Zheng continues to look after his serve, and Mejia continues to leak opportunities, I have the American winning this one comfortably.
