EPL 2022-23: Matchday 5 Preview & Betting Tips
West Ham vs Tottenham

West Ham plays host to rivals Tottenham on Thursday morning, on the back of their first win of the season. A 1-0 win over Aston Villa moved themselves off the bottom of the Premier League table, but it’s been a horror start to the season for David Moyes’ side who are 1-0-3 and have only scored one goal.
Tottenham sit in third place and continue to get the job done, with a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest led by a Harry Kane brace. Spurs are 3-1-0 this season and have carried on their excellent form from the back end of last season that saw them finish in the top four.
Tottenham have been proficient at both ends of the pitch, being the number one ranked defence (3 goals conceded) and the fifth ranked attack (9 goals scored). It’s difficult to see the Hammers penetrating Tottenham’s defence, which has been outstanding to start this season. We haven’t seen the dynamic ball movement that has made West Ham such a dangerous side in the last two seasons, and Spurs will continue their unbeaten run.

Liverpool vs Newcastle

Liverpool needed to respond after a winless start from their opening three games, and they certainly did that. A 9-0 win over Bournemouth equalled the greatest ever winning margin in Premier League history, breaking a host of other records along the way. Arguably the most fascinating aspect of the clash was that Mo Salah didn’t score or record an assist.
Despite dominating the majority of the game, it took a wonder strike in the 90th minute from Allan Saint-Maximin to rescue a point against nineteenth placed Wolverhampton. It’s Newcastle’s third consecutive draw, in what has been a month filled with missed opportunities for the Magpies. Newcastle led 3-1 against Manchester City and should have won their last two games.
Newcastle haven’t beaten Liverpool in the Premier League since 2015, with the Reds having a 7-4-0 record in their last eleven Premier League fixtures against Newcastle. The aggregate score across those eleven games is 23-9, and after seeing Liverpool back at their ruthless best last week, they’re well positioned to continue their dominance over Newcastle.

Leicester vs Manchester United
King Power Stadium, Friday September 2nd, 5:00am (AEST)
After a shocking start to the season which saw them bottom of the league after Matchday 2, Manchester United head to the King Power Stadium looking for their third consecutive win. Leicester are anchored to the bottom of the table after a 0-1-3 start to the season. After a draw on Matchday 1, the Foxes have lost three straight games, with the latest a 2-1 defeat to a ten-man Chelsea.
Erik Ten Hag’s system is slowly taking shape, placing a higher value on defensive structure and impact with the ball, rather than high possession rates. There’s still a long way for the Red Devils to go, but there’s glimpses of a much better method than what United have had in previous seasons.
Leicester are beginning to suffer the consequences of being the only club in the top five leagues in Europe to not sign a new player this season. They’ve made no improvements to a squad that went backwards last season, and if they don’t bring in reinforcements soon, they could be in serious trouble. The Red Devils are growing game by game and should get the job done against Leicester comfortably.

Bournemouth vs Wolves (Thursday 4:30pm AEST)
It’s been a chaotic couple of days for the Cherries after getting hit for nine against Liverpool on the weekend. Manager Scott Parker was fired in the aftermath despite being just four games into a new campaign. I expect this to be a tough match for their players to play in after such a short turnaround, which leads me to take the Wolves on the nose.

Arsenal vs Aston Villa (Thursday 4:30pm AEST)
Arsenal have been the best performing team to start the new season and sit comfortably at the top with a perfect 4/4 record. They showed a lot of character on the weekend when coming back from a goal down to take the chocolates, perhaps showing us that they’ve matured mentally. I expect their good run of form to continue with a comfortable win against an OK Villa outfit.

Manchester City vs Nottingham Forest (Thursday 4:30pm AEST)
Manchester City looked as though they were going to succumb to Palace at home for the second straight time when they fell behind 2-0 on the weekend, however, they quickly flicked the switch and banged in four goals in succession. They’ll make a more positive start against Forest this weekend and will be eyeing off a dominant victory.
