EPL 2022-23: Matchday 19 Preview & Betting Tips

Arsenal vs Newcastle

Emirates Stadium, Wednesday 4th January, 6:45am AEDT

After Manchester City drew 1-1 with Everton, Arsenal sit seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table, with a stranglehold on the title race. The Gunners take on Newcastle, who have taken the league by storm this season, currently sitting in third place and are on a twelve game unbeaten run. The Magpies did frustratingly drop points against Leeds on Matchday 18, however Eddie Howe would be absolutely thrilled with his side’s rapid accession up the table.

This match pits two of the league’s most balanced sides who rank top inside the top three on both sides of the ball. Newcastle are ranked first in defence (11 goals conceded) and third in attack (33 goals scored), while Arsenal have the second best defence (14 goals conceded) and the second best attack (40 goals) in the Premier League.

The Gunners have had the wood over Newcastle for over a decade. Since 2012 the two sides have met in the Premier League 19 times, with Arsenal winning seventeen of those matches. Arsenal have handled every challenge they’ve faced this season, and it’s incredibly difficult to pick against them at the moment. Given Newcastle’s excellent defence, this will be one of their toughest games this season, however the Gunners will rise to the occasion once again.

Manchester United vs Bournemouth

Old Trafford, Wednesday 4th January, 7:00am AEDT

Erik Ten Haag’s men have hit the ground running after the World Cup break, with back to back wins seeing the Red Devils jump into fourth place on the Premier League table. A win over Bournemouth could see United jump into third place, in what would be a remarkable recovery after starting the season 0-2. The Red Devils host a Bournemouth side that has lost six of their last seven games, with the latest being a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Manchester United just keep finding ways to get the job done, their change in philosophy under Ten Haag this season has seen them prioritise impact over possession, and it’s paying dividends. Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, the Red Devils have consistently produced high possession tallies but failed to turn it into genuine attacking opportunities. With a higher emphasis on pressing high and moving the ball forward, United have become a far more effective side, despite having less possession.

On paper this game looks all one way traffic, however there’s some great value with Bournemouth in the handicap markets. The Red Devils aren’t a prolific attacking side and seven of Manchester United’s ten wins this season have come by margins of one goal. United shouldn’t have any troubles picking up the three points, however given their form this season, this won’t be a blowout.

Chelsea vs Manchester City

Stamford Bridge, Friday 6th January, 7:00am AEDT

Manchester City’s aspirations of back-to-back-to-back titles took a huge hit on Sunday, after a 1-1 draw with sixteenth placed Everton. City are now seven points behind league leaders Arsenal, and now face a big challenge to run down the Gunners. The reigning champions head to Stamford Bridge on Friday morning for a must win fixture against a Chelsea side that is falling out of the top four race.

Chelsea have had a difficult time this season, with just one win from their last seven games seeing them in eight place and seven points adrift from the top four. It’s been a similar story for Chelsea who have struggled to produce in their front third, scoring only five goals in their last seven games. Chelsea’s 20 goals this season has them ranked in the bottom half of the league for scoring, and they face an almighty task coming up against a City outfit that is the most prolific attacking side in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola’s side simply can’t afford to drop anymore games, and are going to need to go on a serious run to win the title this season. In the last two seasons in which they won the league, City didn’t lose a game in January. They’ve put together some big streaks that have occurred around the halfway point of the season, and with the title dangerously close to being out of reach, this incredible City side is set to make their push. Chelsea simply don’t have the attacking firepower to compete with City, who will be desperate to make a statement in this clash.

More EPL Matchday 19 Tips

Brentford vs Liverpool (Tuesday 4:30am AEDT)

The Both Teams to Score market has hit in four out of Brentford’s last five games, while it’s hit in each of Liverpool’s last five. On top of that, the last time these sides met in Brentford the final score was 3-3. I’m expecting there to be goals on offer for both teams in this one.

Everton vs Brighton (Wednesday 6:45am AEDT)

Everton probably came away with the luckiest point of the season when they drew 1-1 with Manchester City on the weekend. They capitalised on one of their two shots for the match while City had 16 shots of their won. Everton have now only secured five points from their last nine fixtures and it’s hard to see them getting anything out of their game against Brighton with that sort of form.

Leicester vs Fulham (Wednesday 6:45am AEDT)

These teams have resumed from the World Cup break in contrasting form - Leicester have lost both of their fixtures and Fulham have won both of theirs. On top of that, Fulham have been the far more consistent of the two teams this season and enter MD19 in seventh spot on the table. Simply, they deserve to be more competitive in the head-to-head market against the Foxes, making them a great value bet.

Fulham ($3.10 at Neds)

Southampton vs Nottingham (Thursday 6:30am AEDT)

All the money Nottingham have spent in the transfer windows is starting to bear fruit. After a lean start to the season, they’ve now picked up points in six of their last nine league fixtures. On current form, they won’t have to be world beaters to get something out of their trip to St. Mary’s, and I expect them to do just that.

Nottingham or Draw ($1.75 at Ladbrokes)

Leeds vs West Ham (Thursday 6:45am AEDT)

The Hammers are in absolutely woeful form at the moment and now find themselves legitimately in the relegation battle. They’ve lost five on the spin and six of their last seven and won’t find it easy away at Leeds this weekend. It’s hard to tip anything other than another Hammers defeat here.

Leeds ($2.55 at TAB)

Crystal Palace vs Tottenham (Thursday 7am AEDT)

Tottenham have been inconsistent at best this campaign, but at least their games are always entertaining. They haven’t played out any nil-all draws this season and only two of their matches have had less than two goals scored. They haven’t kept a clean sheet in seven straight league matches but are still extremely potent up front, and for that reason I love the Both Teams to Score market against Palace.

Both Teams to Score ($1.70 at Ladbrokes)

Aston Villa vs Wolves (Thursday 7am AEDT)

Villa pulled off a fantastic win away against Tottenham on the weekend to continue their white-hot run of form. They’ve beaten three top half of the table teams from their last four matches and that sort of form stacks up extremely well against the Wolves. At home, I expect Villa to have it all on their terms in this fixture.
