2013 USPGA Championship betting tips

August 7th 2013, 10:35pm, By: Johnny Houston

Event: 2013 USPGA Championship - Oak Hill Country Club, Rochester, New York
When: Begins Thursday, August 8th

Oak Hill Country Club will play host to the 95th PGA Championship. Situated in Rochester, New York, Oakhill is a 7163 yard par 70 course, with narrow tree lined fairways, long thick rough and greens that are at the smaller end of the scale.

Last played here in 2003 where the winning score was -4 and was won by rather unknown and solo major winner Shaun Micheel. Unlike 2003 we will see the cream rise to the top this week and a player in the top twenty (probably top two) will take it out.

Baseball got Yankees vs. Red Sox World Series, basketball got Lakers vs. Celtics Championship and boxing got Ali vs. Frazier. The stage is now set for golf's heavy weight contenders.

Tiger Woods Vs. Phil Mickelson

They are the two best players in the world and what unfolds at Oakhill this week could also decide player of the year accolades which looks like a two horse race. Tiger’s win at Firestone last week looked and smelt like the Tiger of old. Phil has won two of the last three tournaments that he has played in and Phil announced today that he will be following the trend of club selection and will be leaving the driver out of the bag.

Tiger and Phil are playing some of the best golf of their careers. There aren’t any players on tour that can trade punches with these two at their best and in this spot I don't believe there is value in the rest of the field. It pains me to say that because finding value in golf tournaments is so profitable. However, this tournament and on this course is all set up for a Tiger v Phil showdown.

So as square as it looks, these two will be our official plays for the outright winner. Will also be easy “back-to-lay” options if they play as good as they always do, but don’t get to trigger happy on laying them off as they are clutch players who can easily go all the way if they get even the slightest sniff of victory.

Tiger Woods - $5.50 at Sportsbet
Phil Mickelson - $17 at Sportsbet

Also, take note that over at Sportsbet they are paying the top six instead of the top five for eachway betting. This is certainly some great extra value, especially considering Tiger and Phil always give themselves every chance of finishing near the top of the leader board.

Value Plays

Leader after Round 1

Marc Leishman: $126-1 at Sportsbet
Always a fast starter. Capable of making birdies anywhere.

Angel Miguel Jimenez:  $101-1 at Sportsbet
In top form at the moment and certainly great value.

Webb Simpson: $51-1 at Sportsbet
Another great day one player
