Champions League Final Preview
After winning their fourth straight Ligue 1 title, their teeth title in the past twelve seasons, PSG have the chance to make history and win the Champions League for the first time. Given the strength of Ligue 1, PSG have always been judged more on their performance in Champions, but after being knocked in out the Semi Finals last season and then losing their superstar Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid, it seemed far fetched to thinks PSG could get themselves in a position to win the Champions League.
Inter Milan won an epic Semi Final against Barcelona, winning in extra time of the second leg, 7-6. Inter’s Quarter Final matchup against Bayern Munich was also thrilling, coming out on top 4-3. Inter Milan are battle hardened, and come into this clash off the disappointment of falling one point short of the Serie A title. Unlike PSG, Inter have tasted success in the Champions League, winning three times, with their last triumph in 2010. Inter Milan’s last trip to the Final was a defeat in 2022/23, against Manchester City.
PSG have played a vastly different style this season after Mbappe’s departure, counterpressing to win the ball back high up the pitch. The inclusion of athletic youngsters Bradley Barcola and Désiré Doué who have been instrumental in this system, have shown PSG that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. PSG have been much harder to defend this season given they’ve been more unpredictable, which has seen them score the second most goals in the Champions League (33).
Inter will require some more set piece magic if they are to cause another upset in this competition. Inter Milan scored from a corner in the second leg of the Quarter Final, and scored twice from corners in the first leg of the Semi Final. Although it isn’t a sustainable scoring method, PSG have struggled defending set pieces in Ligue 1 this season, so it will be a key facet in this game.
Champions League Final Tip
PSG are clearly the superior attacking side, but Inter have shown a capacity to hold up defensively and counter attack efficiently. Inter were the second best defence in the Serie A this season, and only conceded one goal in their 8 matches in the group stage of this season. Inter Milan’s defensive work hasn’t been as strong in the knockout stages, conceding 10 goals in their last four games.
There’s a high likelihood this game goes beyond 90 minutes, but if PSG can control the midfield battle, and press in the manner they have this season, they’ll create too many opportunities for Inter to keep at bay.
