AFL Round 16 Sunday Betting Tips
St Kilda vs Hawthorn
Metricon Stadium, 1.05pm (AEST)
The Saints have suffered heartbreaking losses in their last two games on the trot to slide to 7th on the ladder. They sit inside the top eight by just one game and will need to be impressive across their last three games against the Hawks, Eagles and Giants if they want to play finals. A two points loss in Round 13 to the Lions was followed by three point loss to the Demons and the Saints will be desperate to bounce back here.
The Hawks have been terribly out of form of late, losing their last five games on the trot and they embarrassingly handed the Crows their first win of the season in their last game. Although their team looks quite good on paper, they just haven’t been able to find any form this season, and will start as underdogs against the Saints.
With so much on the line for the Saints, it’s tough to see them losing this game. They have tough games against the Eagles and Giants to come, which could potentially both be losses, so a win here is an absolute must if they want to make the eight and we think they come out firing.
Geelong vs Essendon
Gabba, 3.35pm (AEST)
The Cats have won their last five on the trot and will be coming off an extended break when they square off against the Dons on Sunday afternoon. They currently sit in fourth place on the ladder but can draw level with the Lions in second place with a win on Sunday. They have a solid looking injury list at the moment and Gary Ablett has now arrived at the hub and should take his place in the team before the regular season is over.
The Bombers are also starting to get some key players back from injury. Jake Stringer and Joe Daniher have both returned in recent weeks and Daniher in particular looked good in the Dons win over the Hawks back in Round 14. The Bombers were also impressive in a 15 point loss to the Eagles in Round 15 and have plenty to play for, currently sitting in 11th place within striking distance of the top eight.
Like the look of the Bombers here, certainly not to win but to keep it close enough to cover a large 20.5 point line. If they can replicate the form they showed against the Eagles in their last game they should be competitive against a Cats side have looked shaky at times despite winning their last five on the trot.
Western Bulldogs vs West Coast
Metricon Stadium, 6.10pm (AEST)
Over, over, over. That’s all you need to be thinking here. Don’t worry about the rain forecast in Perth (which likely won’t even come to fruition), the line of just 115.5 is too low for two of the highest scoring teams in the competition.
The Eagles have cleared the 115.5 mark in five of their last seven games while the five of the last six games the Bulldogs have been involved in have comfortably cleared that total. This should be a free flowing game regardless of the weather.
