2025 AFL Brownlow Medal Round 9 Votes

May 13th 2025, 5:07pm, By: Brownlow Bandit

What a great round of football we got to enjoy in Round 9 with 8 of the 9 matches decided by under 15 points! We also saw our first draw of the season as the 17th-place Kangaroos managed to take some points away from the top-of-the-table Lions. Collingwood grabbed an excellent away win in the west, the Suns proved their fortress in Darwin could withstand the Dogs, while Giants showed that they have no problems beating the Cats down in Geelong. It was a great round of football and hopefully that continues throughout the season.

As usual, we’ll share our thoughts from every match of the AFL season, along with our Brownlow vote predictions and projections using our own system which has a proven profitable history over many years. For full details on how it works, see the section at the bottom of the page. We hope you'll use our free Brownlow tips to help you find value during the season and built a green book before the big night.

For links to every round of the season and full count, head to our 2025 Brownlow Medal Leaderboard page and check out the latest Brownlow Odds.

2025 AFL Brownlow Round 9 Overview

With current Brownlow favourite Nick Daicos not polling in the last three rounds (according to us!), and even looking a little sore on the field, there's plenty of value around in the latest Brownlow betting markets. Look to grab some of the value on offer and hope they continue to shorten and you'll be in a nice green position come Brownlow Medal night.

There were a few different names polling votes in Round 9, but look to the likes of Tom Liberatore, Connor Rozee, Zak Butters, Patrick Cripps and Tom Green to poll votes and rise up the Brownlow leaderboard. Bailey Smith has been a big shortener in the Brownlow betting, but we don't have him polling votes in Round 9, but he may go close!

2025 AFL Brownlow Votes - Round 9 Match Analysis

Fremantle 12.11.83 def by Collingwood 15.7.97

Collingwood rested a number of players off a five-day break and had to travel across to Perth, but that wasn’t enough to stop them from defeating Fremantle in an impressive victory. Jack Crisp bounced back from the disappointment of last week to star with 29 disposals, 6 tackles, 7 clearances and 2 goals, while Jamie Elliott kicked a bag of 6 goals from 14 disposals and 8 marks. Andrew Brayshaw (34 disposals, 6 clearances, 1 goal), Shai Bolton (28 disposals, 9 clearances, 1 goal) and Jordan Clark (33 disposals, 8 marks) were all good for Fremantle.

Jack Crisp - 2.5
Jamie Elliott - 2.5
Shai Bolton - 0.5
Andrew Brayshaw - 0.5

St.Kilda 9.8.62 def by Carlton 11.11.77

Patrick Cripps (26 disposals, 10 tackles, 8 clearances), Tom De Koning (21 disposals, 36 hitouts, 7 clearances) and Jack Silvagni (17 disposals, 11 marks) were also important in the win. The Hawks pulled clear in the final quarter to shake off Melbourne and grab the points. James Worpel (28 disposals, 10 tackles, 6 clearances) was busy in the trenches, Changkuoth Jiath (25 disposals, 9 marks) provided plenty of run, while Jack Gunston (14 disposals, 6 marks, 3 goals) stood up in the final quarter. Harvey Langford (22 disposals, 6 marks, 3 goals) showed why he is going to be a star of the future for the Dees.

Changkuoth Jiath - 0.5
Jack Gunston - 0.5

Essendon 11.5.71 def Sydney 8.15.63

An undisciplined Swans let the Bombers jump out of the blocks, and despite a late rally from the Swans, the Bombers held on for the win. Nic Martin (38 disposals, 8 marks), Andrew McGrath (35 disposals, 11 marks), Mason Redman (32 disposals, 6 marks, 1 goal), Will Setterfield (28 disposals, 9 marks, 8 tackles) and Zach Reid (27 disposals, 14 marks) were all excellent as they won plenty of ball. Nick Blakey (22 disposals, 13 marks) was the stand out for the Swans.

Nic Martin - 3
Andrew McGrath - 2
Zach Reid - 1

Gold Coast 15.16.106 def Western Bulldogs 14.12.96

The Suns withstood a late scare from the Dogs to confirm themselves as a genuine threat this season. Noah Anderson (28 disposals, 7 clearances), Bailey Humphrey (24 disposals) and John Noble (23 disposals, 1 goal) were good for the Suns, but arguably the best players on the field were wearing Bulldogs colours. Tom Liberatore (35 disposals, 10 tackles, 10 clearances) was enormous under the packs, while Ed Richards (31 disposals, 8 marks, 1 goal), Bailey Dale (31 disposals), Marcus Bontempelli (28 disposals, 6 clearances, 1 goal) and Matthew Kennedy (19 disposals, 7 marks, 7 tackles, 3 goals) were all superb in the losing effort.

Tom Liberatore - 3
Ed Richards - 2
Matthew Kennedy - 0.5
Noah Anderson - 0.5

Port Adelaide 12.12.84 def by Adelaide 13.11.89

A classic showdown saw Port challenge late but the Crows held on for a thrilling victory. The Crows were beaten in the midfield but James Peatling (24 disposals, 12 tackles) threw himself into the contest while Reilly O’Brien (17 disposals, 43 hitouts) got his hand on the ball. Riley Thilthorpe was arguably the Crows most important player with 15 disposals, 10 marks and 3 goals. For the Power, Connor Rozee (32 disposals, 1 goal) and Zak Butters (33 disposals, 10 clearances) couldn’t have done much more, while Miles Bergman (23 disposals, 8 tackles, 6 clearances) found plenty of ball while keeping Jordan Dawson quiet.

Connor Rozee - 3
Zak Butters - 1.5
Riley Thilthorpe - 1.5

Richmond 11.15.81 def West Coast 11.13.79

The battle of the bottom feeders saw the Tigers cling onto a narrow win over the Eagles who will be wondering where their first win is going to come from. Tim Taranto (27 disposals, 7 clearances, 1 goal), Sam Banks (28 disposals, 6 marks) and Jacob Hopper (24 disposals, 7 clearances) collected plenty of ball, Toby Nankervis (18 disposals, 37 hitouts, 1 goal) won the ruck battle, while Tom Lynch (17 disposals, 6 marks, 2 goals) and Seth Campbell (19 disposals, 6 tackles, 2 goals) were good up forward. Liam Baker (22 disposals, 6 tackles), Ryan Maric (25 disposals) and Jamie Cripps (15 disposals, 3 goals) stood out for the Eagles.

Tim Taranto - 3
Sam Banks - 2
Jacob Hopper - 1

Geelong 14.17.101 def by GWS Giants 16.9.105

A thriller in Geelong as the Giants upset the Cats at home. Jesse Hogan was the star with a bag of 7 goals from 22 disposals and 9 marks in a dominant display. Finn Callaghan (29 disposals, 7 tackles) and Tom Green (37 disposals, 7 marks, 6 clearances, 1 goal) were superb in the middle of the ground to set up the win. Bailey Smith (35 disposals, 8 marks, 10 tackles) and Max Holmes (30 disposals, 7 marks, 6 clearances) were busiest for the Cats.

Jesse Hogan - 3
Tom Green - 1.5
Finn Callaghan - 1.5

North Melbourne 10.11.71 drew with Brisbane 10.11.71

The Roos got some points against the top-of-the-table Lions, but they will probably feel like it was a win that slipped away. It might be a tough game to pick votes but Tristan Xerri (19 disposals, 8 tackles, 36 hitouts, 12 clearances) was a dominant force in the middle for the Roos. Luke Davies-Uniacke (32 disposals) and Luke Parker (23 disposals, 8 tackles, 8 clearances, 1 goal) were excellent, while Charlie Comben (21 disposals, 9 marks) stood tall in defence. For the Lions, Josh Dunkley (27 disposals, 8 tackles, 10 clearances) was good, while Dayne Zorko (39 disposals, 8 marks) produced impressive numbers but many of them were cheap in the backline.

Tristan Xerri - 3
Luke Davies-Uniacke - 2
Charlie Comben - 1

Dabble

For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote predictor system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can then form a 'range' for each player (i.e. a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.
