DP World Tour: Alfred Dunhill Links Championship
Thursday 3rd – Sunday 6th October
After a back and forth first few days at the Presidents Cup, it was team United States who captured the win, their 10th straight victory, making it a dominant 13-1-1 record in the format’s history. While the majority of those players will be taking the week off to rest this week, nearly all of the top European players in golf will be teeing it up in Scotland this week, making for a star studded field.
The Field
Rory McIlroy has long touted the Alfred Dunhill as one tournament that he’d desperately like to win, and the Northern Irishman headlines the field this week as the betting favourite. Joining him on the top few lines of the betting markets are the likes of Jon Rahm, Tyrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, Brooks Koepka and Robert MacIntyre.
Past winners of the Alfred Dunhill who will be looking to add another trophy to the case include Matt Fitzpatrick, Danny Willett, Tyrrell Hatton and Thorbjorn Oleson.
The Courses
Players will compete for their first three rounds at one of each of the most well-known courses in Northern Scotland. The Old Course at St. Andrews, Carnoustie Golf Links and Kingsbarns Golf links. After 54 holes, the top 60 players will make the cut and play the final round at the Old Course on Sunday.
Northern Scotland is regarded as the home of golf and two of the three courses in action this week are regular stops for the Open Championship. The difficulty of all three courses, and most in Scotland for that matter, are largely dependant on the wind, meaning there could be some vast discrepancies in scores if players catch the right course on the right day throughout the opening three rounds.
A lot of stats can be thrown out the window when diving into links golf tournaments. I tend to hunt links golf specialists rather than targeting any specific statistical category and that’s what I’ll be doing again this week.
Betting Tips
Tyrrell Hatton ($12.50/Top 10 $2.30)
The Englishman had a disappointing outing at the Open Championship, missing the cut for the first time this season, however, he has bounced back with two strong performances on the DPWT over recent months, finishing T18 at the British Masters and T10 at the Spanish Open. Two time winner at the Old Course.
Louis Oosthuizen ($46/Top 30 $2.05)
Another winner at St Andrews is South African Louis Oosthuizen, who lifted the Open Championship Claret Jug back in 2010. He has been solid on the LIV Tour since signing on, finishing in the top 10 on eight occasions. Needs to play well to gain the OWGR points to start to qualify for the majors again.
