Irina Begu vs Dayana Yastremska
Have we finally seen the return to form of Dayana Yastremska?
It feels that way after she has made her way through qualifying in Dubai for the loss of one set. She managed to beat the very talented Clara Tauson and looked very strong against a tricky opponent in Madison Brengle in the final round of qualifying. Yastremska has struggled to find any confidence or form in her game since returning from her ban last year, however this is the best patch of tennis she has produced during that stretch, in what looks to be favourable conditions.
She gets Irina Begu coming off a semi final appearance in St Petersburg, where she defeated Zhang, and out-of-sorts Kvitova and Martincova, before succumbing to Sakkari in the semi final. Begu hasn’t looked great in outdoor hardcourt conditions, outside of a first-up win in Melbourne against Jessica Pegula, making it hard to be too intrigued by the near coin-flip odds for the Romanian on outdoor hard.
Coming off three strong wins in qualifying, I am happy to back Yastremska to continue the good form here for one unit.
