2022-23 A-League: Round 4 Preview & Betting Tips

October 27th 2022, 9:30pm, By: Jake Smit

A-League Round 4 Betting Tips

The A-League season continues this weekend with six fixtures for Round 4. It was a tough betting weekend in Round 3 with so many unlikely results occurring, but we’re confident we have some winners for you in this article.

Check out our Matchday 4 preview and A-League betting tips below!

A-League Round 4 Preview & Betting Tips

Western Sydney Wanderers vs Newcastle Jets

Friday 7:45pm AEDT, Bankwest Stadium

The Wanderers couldn’t keep their 100% record for the season intact when they drew with the Roar last weekend, but they remain undefeated at 2-1-0. Likewise, the Jets have hit the ground running this campaign with two wins from as many games, both of which were on their home deck. They now hit the road for the first time this season in a fixture featuring two of the four undefeated teams after three rounds.

Both of these teams finished in the bottom four last season, so it remains to be seen whether their red-hot starts are a true representation of their quality, or whether they’ll just fizzle out as the season progresses. Regardless, there’s cause for optimism for both teams, particularly for the Wanderers who have conceded only one goal to date. As long as they play with the defensive urgency we’ve seen from them in recent outings, they should be able to deliver the Jets their first loss in their first road game of their campaign.

Brisbane Roar vs Melbourne Victory

Saturday 3pm AEDT, Dolphin Stadium

Goals were hard to come by for the Roar last season and that’s carried over to this campaign where they’ve scored just once from three outings. Similarly, Victory have failed to score in each of their last two games, although they banged in three against Sydney in their season opener.

These teams are no strangers to playing out low-scoring games against each other. The last two times they’ve met have resulted in just two goals combined. With that in mind, coupled with their recent woes in front of goal, taking the unders in the 2.5 goals market looks to be the play on this occasion.

Central Coast Mariners vs Western United

Saturday 5:15pm AEDT, Bluetongue Stadium

The Mariners are coming off a strong 2021-22 campaign but are yet to get going this season. Their loss against last season’s Wooden Spooners in Perth Glory is certainly alarming, particularly with it coming on their home deck. Likewise, Western United have failed to reach anything close to the levels of last season where they were crowned champions. They enter this fixture having registered only one points from three outings.

Neither team would be happy with their results to start the season, but United have clearly had the tougher draw and will still fancy their chances of getting back to a level where they’re contending. They have the perfect opportunity to secure their first win of the season against a Mariners team that will surely be lacking confidence after their recent loss. I believe the champs will get off the mark this weekend.

Western United H2H

Macarthur FC vs Sydney FC

Saturday 7:45pm AEDT, Campbelltown Stadium

Macarthur and Sydney have both had solid starts to the season and each currently occupy a spot in the top six. Macarthur are one of four teams still undefeated after three games, while Sydney lost their opener against Victory but have bounced back with two strong performances.

Macarthur’s defence has been excellent to date and is equal best in the competition in terms of goals conceded. In contrast, Sydney are yet to keep a clean sheet and have been relying on their firepower in the top half of the pitch to eek out results. With all of that said, this is a really tough fixture to predict and as such, I’ll be taking Macarthur in the ‘Draw No Bet’ market for some insurance.

Adelaide United vs Perth Glory

Sunday 3pm AEDT, Coopers Stadium

Adelaide United finally return home to play at Hindmarsh this weekend. They’ve spent the first three rounds on the road and have amassed a 0-2-1 record. Meanwhile, Perth Glory picked up a rare win against the Mariners in their most recent outing and were thoroughly deserving of the three points. That result earned them their first points of the 2022-23 season.

Adelaide are the deserving favourites in this fixture but are certainly short enough at around the $1.70 mark, particularly considering they’re yet to salute this season. Instead, I’m looking to play the Both Teams to Score market, which has hit in six of the last seven meetings between these clubs, with a total of 29 goals being scored during that span.

Both Teams to Score

$1.75 (2 Units)

Melbourne City vs Wellington Phoenix

Sunday 5pm AEDT, AAMI Park

The most one-sided fixture in the head-to-head markets will take place on Sunday night with Melbourne City hosting Wellington. City have started their season in excellent form with wins in all three of their games, while conceding only one goal in the process. On the other hand, Phoenix are winless from their three fixtures and were on the wrong end of a 3-1 score line against the Jets last time out.

City are certainly the deserving odds-on favourites in this fixture, especially when you consider they won 6-0 in one meeting against Phoenix last season. City have been the benchmark of the competition for a number of years now and that looks to be the case yet again. I expect them to make light work of the Phoenix on Sunday night.

Melbourne City -1.5

$2.50 (2 Units)
