Another round of A-League action coming up this weekend as we head into Matchday 21 of the season. Just four weeks remain in the season and there is still a very tight battle for five of the six spots in the finals. Catch our best bets for the weekend’s action below.
Thursday 7.05pm (AEST)
Melbourne City have been the best team in the league over the past few months and have ascended to top spot on the A-League table with a 13-2-5 record. They are undefeated in their last seven games, having racked up five wins and two losses through that period. They have scored 21 goals in those seven games, including a 7-0 drubbing against cross town rivals Melbourne Victory a few weeks ago.
Adelaide United were in fantastic form through the months of February and March but have since fallen away a touch, winning just one of their last seven games. They have recorded four draws in those seven, but there’s no doubt this will be a difficult trip to Melbourne. They sit in 3rd place on the table with 32 points on the season, but sit just five points above the wellington Phoenix all the way down in 9th place.
These two teams have squared off once already this season, with Adelaide United claiming a 2-0 win in Adelaide and in fact, United have a 3-1-0 record in their last four against Melbourne City. However, they haven’t won against City in Melbourne since all the way back in 2016 and I think Melbourne should be too good here.
Friday 7.05pm (AEST)
Five games to go, that’s all Melbourne Victory will be thinking in the lead up to this clash against Macarthur on Friday night. It’s been an absolute horror season to date for the Victory, and they sit in 2nd last place on the A-League table with a 4-3-14 record. They have recorded just one point in their last four games and this will be the 2nd time in just over a week that they have faced Macarthur.
Macarthur are undefeated in their last four games but three of those have been draws. They are well and truly in the heat of the battle for the top six, sitting in 5th place with 32 points, tied with the 2nd placed Sydney FC and just five ahead of the 9th placed Phoenix.
Macarthur won’t be taking any chances here with a spot in the finals on the line. They were too good for the Victory away from home just over a week ago so form would suggest that they will win again when they return to Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Friday night.
Saturday 2.35pm (AEST)
At the time of writing, Western United still have a midweek clash against the Perth Glory to compete in on Thursday night before they square off against Sydney FC on Saturday afternoon. The cross-country trip for the midweek clash will no doubt take its toll on the Western United players before they return to Mars Stadium in Ballarat on the weekend.
Sydney FC will have the benefit full week off when they line up on Saturday, which will be invaluable against what will be a battered Western United outfit. Sydney have lost just one of their last eight games and the last time they faced Western United, they claimed a 2-0 win. They are 2-0-1 against Western United in their history.
There’s still a little bit of meat left on the Sydney FC bone here as they start at $1.80 in the WDW market. Considering how tired the Western Untied players will be here, Sydney FC to win this one is by best bet of the week.
