Its that time of year again! Award season is in full swing with the Grammys taking place last weekend and movies night of nights, The Oscars, set to be held this Monday morning (AEDT).
There is plenty of buzz around the Oscars this year with two of the most high-profile movies of the year, 'A Star is Born' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody', in contention for an array of awards. We take a look at some of the major categories of the night and give our betting tips below.
2019 Academy Awards Betting Tips
As it so often is with the Oscars.the favourite in each of the major categories is extremely short. sometimes things leak in the world of entertainment but most of the time the Academy Award voters are just very easy to predict. We'll be steering clear of the short favourite in each category and hoping to find some value elsewhere.
Best Picture
The biggest of all the awards on Oscar night is Best Picture. There are eight nominees this year, a couple of which were some of the highest profile movies of the year. semi-autobiographical drama 'Roma', directed by winner of the 2013 Best Director award for his work on 'Gravity', Alfonso Cuaron, is the hot favouritefor the Best Picture award at just $1.30.
Roma seems to be the pick amongst experts but for some value we are leaning towards biographical comedy-drama 'Green Book'. Starring Viggo Mortensen of Lord of the Rings fame as well as up and comer Mahershala Ali, Green Book scored a lot of critical acclaim for its depicture of an unlikely friendship overcoming racism in a time when segregation was still widely accepted.
If you're looking for extreme value, look no further than the Bradley Cooper directed remake of 'A Star Is Born', which performed extremely well in theartres and has arguably the most backing of the public opinion.

Best Actor
Bohemian Rhapsody was one of the most popular movies of the year, chronicling the life of Freddie Mercury and Queen itself. Rami Malek, who gained popularity from his performance in the TV drama iRobot, is an almost unbackable favourite in the Best Actor category for his portrayal of Mercury, and while we do think he will win, there’s no value at just $1.07.
There might be some value to be found in Christian Bale, who was nearly unrecognisable in his role as Dick Cheney in the political biographic ‘Vice’. This will be Bale’s second nomination after earning the nod for his role in American Hustle back in 2013. Playing real, influential people to a high standard often carries weight with the Academy Award voters, which should hold Bale in good stead.

Best Actress
Once again, there’s an almost unbackable favourite in the Best Actress category. Glenn Close is at just $1.10 for her role as Joan Castleman in ‘The Wife. There is a lot of buzz about Lady Gaga’s performance in ‘A Star is Born’ and at $15 there might be some value there, however, its Olivia Colman who we think should be the best chance to upset Close.
Colman played Queen Anne in the period comedy/drama ‘The Favourite’. Colman picked up the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy for her performance and won the hearts of many new fans with her acceptance speech. While Close won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama, we think this race is a lot close than the bookmakers are suggesting.
