A-League Round 2 Betting Tips

Melbourne Victory vs Western Sydney Wanderers

Friday 7:30pm AEDT, Marvel Stadium

Melbourne Victory got their season off to an underwhelming start when they played their part in a 0-0 draw with Melbourne City in the derby. It was far from the most entertaining match in Round 1 and certainly won’t go down in history. Victory played surprisingly defensive and were unable to create too many genuine chances as a result.

The Wanderers got the job done in their first game of the season, defeating the Mariners 2-1 at home. Mitchell duke was the man of the match with a brace and the winning goal in the 82nd minute. There certainly won’t be too many Wanderers fans gloating about the win however, considering the Mariners were clearly the worst team in the league last season.

We believe that Victory have the much better starting XI of the two and deservingly go into this clash as favourites. They’ve drifted a little bit in the market due to their performance last week, but that only gives us more reason to back them in to bounce back at juicy odds.

Melbourne City vs Adelaide United

Sunday 4pm AEDT, AAMI Park

As mentioned above, Melbourne City were part of the least entertaining match in Round 1 when they drew nil all with Melbourne Victory. They were arguably the better team on the night with four shots on target compared to Victory’s one, but still wouldn’t be pleased with how they created in their front third. One big positive was their ability to defend and stop any positive moves by their opponents.

In stark contrast to the derby, Adelaide United were part of a thrilling fixture that saw them lose 2-3 to Sydney FC. United were able to level up the game after trailing 2-0 early on, but eventually lost after conceding in the 87th minute. Obviously, the fact that they were able to get back into the match was a positive but conceding three goals at home is always concerning.

AAMI Park was a fortress for Melbourne City last season, losing just one fixture on their home deck which was a league best. We believe they have the talent to continue on from that with a win on Sunday afternoon against a United outfit that lacks quality in their defensive half.

Sydney FC vs Wellington Phoenix

Sunday 6pm AEDT, Leichhardt Oval

Sydney FC got their season off to a dream start with a 3-2 win over Adelaide on the road. Star striker Adam Le Fondre got his campaign underway with a brace inside 30 minutes, reassuring us that our Golden Boot money is in good hands. The reigning champs now get a chance to make it 2-0 when they get back on their home deck for the first time this season.

Wellington Phoenix were the big disappointments in Round 1, losing their opening home fixture to new club Western United. We expected a far better effort from them, but it seems all the pre-season doubters were right at this stage. It won’t get any easier this weekend when they travel to Sydney to take on the champs.

Sydney were the second-best home side last season with nine wins from 13 games, while Phoenix won just three of their 13 away fixtures. These clubs rosters have a big contrast in talent and coupled with the home ground advantage, we expect Sydney to be far too good.

Sydney FC -1.5
