2017 PGA: US Masters Preview & Betting Tips

April 4th 2017, 3:43pm, By: Johnny Houston

For everyone who followed our golf betting tips last week you already know we hit a $34 winner with Russell Henley claiming the Shell Houston Open! Hopefully we can continue to deliver more winners like that for the rest of the year and especially this week as we offer our 2017 The Masters Preview & Betting Tips

Where: Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, Georgia
When: Thursday 6th of April (11:00pm AEST first tee)

2017 US Masters Betting Tips

Wake up and smell the azaleas punters. It’s that time of year when we set our alarms for 4:00am and get our best “I’m sick” voices ready for the boss. The 2017 Masters tournament marks the 20th anniversary since Tiger Woods won his first green jacket. Wow, saying that out loud makes me feel old.

Golf has moved into Tiger-less era. There’s no doubt this will be a difficult period to adjust to as a viewer or a nervous period for the TV broadcasters/sponsors. However, I strongly believe that golf will be just fine because there is no athlete that is bigger than the sport (although Tiger Woods came close).

The Masters always has plenty of storylines to follow and this year is no different:

-Can Dustin Johnson continue his dominance of the world of golf and move into rock-star status?
-Will Jordan Spieth recover from his Masters-Meltdown? (I know I can’t wait to see what he does on the 12th hole again)
-Once again we ask the question: Will Rory McIlroy complete the career grand slam?
-Then there is Australia’s best hope Jason Day who is dealing with very hard times.

So, as you can see there’s plenty of storylines to follow during the four days at Augusta National. Something that no player can hide from is the weather and this year the wind is going to play a huge role in deciding a champion. I was just reading that today practice on course was cut short due to a tornado warning (I’ve never seen that before at the Masters). Players will have to survive Thursday and Friday as there are winds of up to 50km/h forecast. If players can make the cut they will enjoy sunny conditions for the weekend.

Dustin Johnson

Let’s take a look at the tournament favourite. Since winning his first major at the U.S Open last year, DJ has been on an absolute rampage. In his last three PGA Tour starts he has finished 1st, 1st and yep you guessed it, 1st. He is the new world number one and leads this season's FedEx cup standings. The biggest improvement has been his short game. He has always been known as one of the longest on tour, but now his short game is as good as his ball striking (almost!). Around the green, he is ranked 6th in strokes gained and he is also scrambling at 65.31%. DJ is also putting at a very high level, ranked 29th on tour in strokes gained putting.

The rest of Johnson's game is basically perfect. He is ranked 1st in driving distance, 1st in greens-in-regulation and 1st in strokes gained: tee-to-green. These are unbelievable stats and he is backing them up with tournament wins. He may look too short at $7.00 but if he was a thoroughbred he would be entering this race at the same odds as Black Caviar or Winx (..maybe not, but you get my point). He is certainly not a “value play” but personally I don't mind Dustin Johnson at $7.

Dustin Johnson to win

$7.00

*Breaking news: Dustin Johnson injured his lower back in a freak accident at his home and is uncertain to play or much it will affect his game if he does playOut to $9. Bet with caution.

Justin Rose

Always brings his best to Augusta. He finished 10th last year and 2nd the year before. His last win was at the Olympics, but he is also having a solid year on the PGA Tour. Rose finished 2nd in the Sony Open back in January, finished 4th at the Farmers Insurance and 4th at the Genesis Open. He also handled the wind last week at the Shell Houston Open finishing in 15th place. All in all, Rose has had a very solid Masters Prep. Ranked 19th in Strokes Gained: Around-the-green and 8th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-tee. Also scrambles at 62.34%.

Justin Rose to win

$26

Phil Mickelson

He might be 46 years old, but “Lefty” still has another major in him. The windy conditions only help his case, along with course knowledge and the fact Augusta National favours left handed golfers. He is having a solid season and ticks all the boxes in our stats categories. Ranked 2nd in Strokes Gained: Around the greens, ranked 17th in Strokes Gained Putting and 63.55% scrambling. Also, finished 2nd here just two years ago.

Phil Mickelson to win

$26

Paul Casey

Paul Casey has played very well at Augusta in his last two starts, finishing 4th last year and 6th the year before. Casey is known as a good player in windy conditions and ticks the boxes for us in the stats department - ranked 5th in Strokes Gained: Around the green and 7th in scrambling at 67.66%. His putting can let him down, but his experience on the Augusta greens is a big positive.

Paul Casey to win

$41

Andy Sullivan

Missed the cut here last year but it was his first start at Augusta and he should have learnt a lot. Sullivan has three European tour wins and the English golfers always play well at the Masters. Six of them finished in the top 10 last year. Sullivan played well at the Shell Houston Open last week finishing in 15th place, which included a third round 67 in very windy conditions.

Andy Sullivan to win

$201
