2016 PGA: Travelers Championship Preview & Betting Tips

August 3rd 2016, 3:04pm, By: Johnny Houston

2016 PGA: Travelers Championship

Where: TPC River Highlands, Connecticut
When: Thursday 4th August (9:00pm first tee)
Purse: $6,600,000

This week the PGA tour stays on the east coast for the Travelers Championship. TPC River Highlands golf club will once again host the event.

This tournament started all the way back in 1952 and was originally called the Insurance City Open. In 1984 it was redesigned by one of the most famous course designers in golf, Pete Dye. He is famous for courses such as Whistling Straights and TPC Sawgrass (stadium course). Despite the strength of the fields it is one of the most attended PGA events each year.

TPC River Highlands is a very short course at just 6,255m. Last year Bubba Watson over powered the course for his second win at the Travelers Championship. However, other players such as K.J Choi and Ryan Moore have had good results with a more strategic approach. It really is a golf course that suits any type of player. The most important factor I’m taking into account this week will be previous course experience and also any sort of motivational angle that will give us an edge.

Paul Casey

I guess there’s no bigger motivational angle than finishing runner up the previous year (in a playoff). Paul Casey finished last year’s Travelers Championship with rounds of 64 and 65. He finished 4th at the Masters and 10th in the PGA Championship last week. He is still without a win in 2016 and I expect Casey to put together four good rounds of golf.

Brendan Steele

This guy has plenty of course experience and has also had some good results here. Including a T13th in 2013 and a T5th in 2014. He struggled in the last two majors but he will take advantage of the course length as he is one of the longer players on tour (averaging 302.8 yards) off the tee (ranked 18th).
Tip: Brendan Steele to win outright - $46 at sportsbet

Ryan Moore

Ryan Moore has been very selective with tournaments this year and has struggled in the Major’s. However, he does thrive in these weaker fields. Moore has also had great results here. He was runner up in 2011, finished 7th in 2013 and 5th in 2014. He is not long off the tee but this course obviously suits his eye.
Tip: Ryan Moore to win outright - $51 at sportsbet

Chris Stroud

The Travelers Championship is probably Chris Stroud’s best event. He finished runner-up in 2013, 18th in 2014 and 10th last year. He fired a 5 under 67 in the final round of the Canadian Open and is plenty of value this week.
Tip: Chris Stroud to win outright - $101 at sportsbet
