2014 PGA: HP Byron Nelson Preview and Betting Tips

May 15th 2014, 1:01pm, By: Johnny Houston

2014 PGA – HP Byron Nelson

Where: Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas
When: Thursday, May 5th at 10:00pm AEST

The 2014 PGA tour heads over to Texas for the HP Byron Nelson. The big story for Aussies this week is that regardless of the result here Adam Scott will be ranked as the number one golfer in the world. That’s because he isn’t playing the HP Byron Nelson and neither is current number one Tiger Woods and the way the ranking system works, Scott will steal the thrown off Woods. This will be the first time there has been an Australian number one ranked golfer since the days of Greg Norman.

So, Scott and Woods may not be playing, but plenty of others are and it’s going to be a tough weekend of gold.  The Four Seasons Resort is a long 7,166 yard, Par 70 course. The fairways are lined with trees and there are very large putting surfaces. As in the past, this type of course has always favoured the longer hitters, with the likes of Keegan Bradley, Jason Day and soon-to-be world number one Adam Scott having used their big hitting abilities to win here.

In keeping with this theme, we will be looking at having a punt on big hitters such as Dustin Johnson, Gary Woodland and Brooks Koepka. There is an argument that Keegan Bradley is perfect for this course, but we think his odds are a bit short here.

Dustin Johnson:

Everyone knows how talented Johnson is, we are just waiting for him explode on the tour. This wide course sets up for Johnson to attack with his long hitting.

Odds:
Betfair: $24-1
Ladbrokes: $23-1
Sportingbet: $23-1

Gary Woodland:

Woodland hasn’t quite put four rounds together of late, but has plenty of ability, hits it big and last week at the Player’s Championship he was in contention going to the last round but couldn’t catch a break. Woodlands talked about being “anxious” with his game in that last round and specifically said he would be looking for more consistency here at the Byron Nelson.

Odds:
Betfair: $32-1
Ladbrokes: $29-1
Sportingbet: $31-1

Brooks Koepka

Koepka is perhaps more of an unknown, but he hits it a mile and has shown some freakish ability in smaller tournaments on the tour.

Odds:
Betfair: $100-1
Ladbrokes: $67-1
Sportingbet: $71-1
