Jessica Pegula vs Jessica Bouzas Maneiro

Friday July 3, approx. 10:00pm AEST

It has been a bit of a scratchy start to the tournament from American Jessica Pegula, but I like her to get things back on track here as she takes on Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro for a place in the 4th round of Wimbledon.

Let’s start by taking a look at the form of Pegula. The American had one of the better lead-in runs of form, having defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the semi finals in Berlin (including a 3rd set bagel) and pushed Linda Noskova to 3 sets in the final. Although she has won through in straight sets in her first two rounds, it hasn’t been without some patchy form. She led 4-0 and *4-1 40/0 in the first set against Vidmanova in round 1, before claiming the set 7-5, and was taken to a first set tiebreak against Sorribes Tormo in round 2, needing to save quadruple set point in the tiebreak, before reeling off the last 6 games in a row to win 7-6(6) 6-1. Yes, there are lapses, but they are still reasonably strong wins with room for improvement.

Bouzas Maneiro may not have as much room for improvement in her game from what I have seen this week. She got the better of Potapova in round 1, though it is a very hard match to get read on, and the Spaniard was fortunate Potapova could only muster a first serve percentage of 38%. Round 2 was all about break point conversion, with Bouzas Maneiro converting 9 of 12 break points earned on her way to a three-set win. My concern for the Spaniard coming into this one is the fact that her first serve percentage is consistently sitting lower than Pegula’s whilst also having the poorer second serve.

To me, this feels as though it should be a 6.5 game handicap between the pair. To be able to take a -5.5 games here on Pegula looks very solid, with the American having the edge in too many areas to not be a very strong favourite here.
