Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs (10:30am AEST)
The defending champs quickly stamped their authority in Game 5 at home as the OKC Thunder won 127-114 on their home court. They were simply more efficient from the field and beyond the arc, fought harder for second-chance points and back-to-back MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander forced the San Antonio Spurs to commit shooting fouls, as SGA got to the line, finishing with 16/17 at the charity stripe. Despite a 7-19 shooting performance, SGA finished with 32 points. He also dished off nine assists. Alex Caruso was hot once again off the bench, dropping 22 points and 4-8 from deep, while Jared McCain who got the start, finished with 20 points.
Expect Victor Wembanyama to bounce back after a horrid performance, as he had 20 points on 4-15 shooting, 0-5 from deep, and only six rebounds. De’Aaron Fox also shot 4-15 from the field. It is unlikely both players will shoot that poorly in Game 6 in front of their home crowd. It is best never to delve too deep into a single game, as Game 4 was the polar opposite with the Spurs winning 103-82 at home. The big watch is whether Jalen Williams returns for the Thunder as he is listed as questionable, and Ajay Mitchell is ruled out for Game 6.
I feel like the Spurs are probably one more year away from standing up to the pressure of the NBA postseason. The Thunder are already the defending champs, have prior championship experience with Caruso’s time with the Los Angeles Lakers, and they have a deep rotation. When push comes to shove, the Thunder have looked the better team in the series, and as underdogs here, they appeal in this contest to advance to the NBA Finals.
