2023 AFL Brownlow Round 11 Overview

It was a round full of upsets but the cream rose to the top in terms of Brownlow votes as all of the top six players, and 10 of the top 12, on our leaderboard were all in the Round 11 Brownlow votes.

Nick Daicos, Jordan Dawson, Zac Butters and Christian Petracca are all likely to pick up at least a vote, with Petracca's price of $11 at Betfair to win looking like a bit of value with Clayton Oliver out injured for several weeks and Max Gawn struggling for form. Tim Taranto has been the recruit of the season for Richmond and looks a great price for a nibble at $27 at Betfair as he picked up another three votes after a huge game, despite the loss for the Tigers.

Let's see where our Brownlow votes went for Round 11 of the AFL!

Sydney 11.11.77 def Carlton 6.15.51

The Blues again wasted their chances as their season slipped away, while the Swans got the points to keep their hopes alive for the season. Chad Warner was the recipient of the Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal for his 29 disposals and 2 goals. Perhaps unlucky to miss out on the medal was Nick Blakey who was superb in the air and provided great run on the ground with his 26 disposals and 12 marks. Jake Lloyd  was also very good with 35 disposals and 6 marks. Charlie Curnow stood tall for the Blues with 18 disposals, 11 marks and 1 goal, while Sam Walsh (31 disposals, 6 marks, 1 goal) also tried hard.

Chad Warner - 2.5
Nick Blakey - 2.5
Jake Lloyd - 1

St Kilda 12.6.78 def by Hawthorn 12.16.88

The Saints had the lead into the last quarter but the Hawks kicked the last five goals of the game from nowhere to pinch it at Marvel. James Sicily was exceptional in defence with a massive 43 disposals and 16 marks, including 8 intercepts, as he constantly repelled the attacks of the Saints. Dylan Moore (31 disposals, 9 marks, 1 goal) played his best game of the year, with Will Day (30 disposals) and Jai Newcombe (30 disposals, 9 clearances) both important in the middle. Brad Couch (26 disposals, 7 marks, 7 clearances, 1 goal) was best for the Saints.

James Sicily - 3
Dylan Moore - 2
Jai Newcombe - 1

Melbourne 10.12.72 def by Fremantle 12.7.79

A huge upset as Freo rolled the Demons at the MCG. Luke Jackson was superb against his old side, amassing 19 disposals, 15 hitouts, 6 tackles, 8 clearances and a goal after Sean Darcy went down with injury. Andrew Brayshaw (29 disposals, 6 tackles, 7 clearances) and Caleb Serong (26 disposals, 1 goal) were excellent in the middle, while Hayden Young (27 disposals) was creative from the backline. Christian Petracca was left to fly the flag solo in this one as he collected 30 disposals and 8 clearances for the Dees. Tricky game for Brownlow votes.

Luke Jackson - 2
Andrew Brayshaw - 2
Christian Petracca - 2

Geelong 10.14.74 def by GWS Giants 12.9.81

The upsets continued as the Giants knocked off Geelong at the Cattery! Toby Greene was a star with 4 goals from 19 disposals and 9 marks, with good support up forward from Jesse Hogan (19 disposals, 10 marks) and Brent Daniels (19 disposals, 7 tackles, 3 goals). Lachie Whitfield (31 disposals) and Tom Green (28 disposals, 6 tackles) also won plenty of ball. Tom Stewart was a rock in defence with 31 disposals and 9 marks, but it wasn’t enough for the Cats.

Brent Daniels - 1

Gold Coast 13.6.84 def Western Bulldogs 11.11.77

Noah Anderson (26 disposals, 7 clearances) was busy while Jarrod Witts (19 disposals, 51 hitouts) won the ruck battle. Jack Lukosius finished off their work with 5 goals from 12 disposals but several of those were from the goal square. Marcus Bontempelli (27 disposals, 11 tackles, 9 clearances) and Jack Macrae (33 disposals, 8 tackles) were very good for the Dogs.

Nic Martin was superb with 31 disposals and 10 marks, while Zach Merrett (32 disposals) and Mason Redman (31 disposals, 11 marks, 1 goal) also won plenty of ball. Liam Duggan (35 disposals, 12 marks) and Jayden Hunt (34 disposals) were two Eagles that could hold their heads high.

Nic Martin - 3
Zach Merrett - 2
Mason Redman - 1

Richmond 9.13.67 def by Port Adelaide 10.17.77

Port Adelaide are now clear in second spot on the ladder after a hard-fought win in slippery conditions at the MCG. While the Power got the win, the three Brownlow votes should be going to Tiger Tim Taranto who played a sensational game with 33 disposals, 7 tackles, 7 clearances and 4 goals. Zac Butters (32 disposals, 1 goal) and Connor Rozee (27 disposals, 6 clearances) might be in the votes again, while Shai Bolton (23 disposals, 1 goal) had moments of brilliance for the Tigers.

Tim Taranto - 3
Zac Butters - 2
Connor Rozee - 0.5
Shai Bolton - 0.5

For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote predictor system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can then form a 'range' for each player (i.e. a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.
