The 2019 Cycling season officially gets underway this week as the first of the three Grand Tours, the Giro d’Italia kicks off! We’ll be previewing all three Grand Tours at BeforeYouBet this year and while the markets are quite slim pickings, we think there’s still plenty of value to be found in the general classification.
We take a look at some of the top chances in this year’s Giro and give our betting tips below.
2019 Giro d’Italia Betting Tips
British star Chris Froome will not be back in Italy this season to defend his title from last year. The win, which completed the trio of Grand Tour wins after winning the 2017 Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana ultimately left Froome gassed and unable to defend his Tour de France title. He won’t make the same mistake this season as he attempts to win back the Yellow Jersey from teammate Geraint Thomas.
The absence of Froome and a few other key riders leaves the door wide open this season, with three big chances leading the betting markets at most major outlets.
2017 Giro winner Tom Dumoulin ($3.50) is one of the favourites and can win his second Grand Tour in Italy this season. The 28 year old had a fantastic 2017 season by winning both the Giro and the World Time Trial Championship, which makes him a threat on both the mountain and the flat stages in the three week race. He also took out the BinckBank Tour in 2017, held across Belgium and his home country of the Netherlands. Dumoulin had a quieter 2018 but still won the individual time trial stage of the Giro and finished 2nd overall behind only Froome. He also finished 2nd in the Time Trial World Championships to Australian Rohan Dennis. Should be a massive chance this year. Back Dumoulin to win the first stage, which is an 8.2km individual time trial.
Another key chance this year will be British rider Simon Yates ($3.75). Yates will be looking to win his second consecutive Grand Tour after he took out the Vuelta at the end of last season. Yates was dominant in 2018, finishing first overall in the UCI World Tour points rankings ahead of the likes of Peter Sagan, Alejandro Valverde and Geraint Thomas with 3072. His year included three stage wins in the Giro and one in the Vuelta and 2nd place overall finishes in the Paris-Nice, Tour de Pologne and Prueba Villafranca de Ordizia.
Tough to falter the two names mentioned above but we’ll be looking elsewhere for value this year in the form of Slovenian Primoz Roglic ($3.25). The 29 year old has had a fantastic start to the 2019 season, having already racked up three overall wins in the Tour de Romandie, the UAE Tour and the Tirreno-Adriatico. Roglic hasn’t raced in the Giro for the past two years in an attempt to win the Tour de France. The step back in competition should be favourable for him and he is great value, particularly at BetEasy, where you can get $3.25 for him compared to $2.80 at most other agencies.
