Essendon vs Fremantle Preview & Tips: 2026 AFL Round 10

May 16th 2026, 6:06pm, By: Andy Rosos

Essendon vs Fremantle

Sunday afternoon shapes as a fascinating clash between a Fremantle side that suddenly looks every bit a genuine premiership contender and an Essendon outfit still searching for consistency despite showing patches of improvement over the last month.

The Dockers arrive at the MCG riding an eight-game winning streak and playing with enormous confidence on both sides of the ball. Essendon, meanwhile, continue to compete hard through the middle but their inability to stop opposition scoring chains remains a massive issue. Against one of the AFL’s most balanced teams, that defensive vulnerability looks likely to be exposed again.

We bring you our full preview and expert tips for the Essendon vs Fremantle below. And if you’re keen to back in our tips, consider doing so at Bet365 - one of the biggest and best sportsbooks in the world!

Essendon vs Fremantle Prediction & Betting Tips: AFL 2026 Round 10

Bombers Bleeding Big Scores

Essendon’s season continues to feel slightly better than the ladder suggests, but the same structural flaws keep appearing every week. Brad Scott’s side compete hard around the ball and have periods where they genuinely look dangerous offensively, but once momentum swings against them the defensive setup can unravel quickly.

Against GWS last week, the Bombers actually controlled large stretches through midfield pressure and repeat inside 50 entries before fading badly late. Peter Wright, Nate Caddy and Archer May all looked threatening inside forward 50, while the returns of Darcy Parish and Mason Redman added much-needed polish through the middle.

The issue remains transition defence. Essendon have now conceded 103, 143 and 137 points across their last three losses and continue struggling to contain opposition teams once ball movement opens up through the corridor.

That becomes particularly dangerous against Fremantle because the Dockers are currently moving the ball with speed and precision while also generating huge pressure scores from turnover. If Essendon allow Fremantle repeat forward-half entries, this game could get away from them quickly.

Dockers Look the Real Deal

Fremantle’s rise over the last two months has been built on balance. Justin Longmuir’s side can now beat teams in multiple ways, whether through territory control, midfield dominance or overwhelming pressure, and that flexibility is what makes them look so dangerous heading deeper into the season.

Last week’s comeback win over Hawthorn might have been their most impressive performance yet. The Dockers completely strangled the Hawks late in the game, kicking the final five goals while dominating territory and forcing turnover after turnover through elite pressure around the contest.

The midfield combination of Caleb Serong, Andrew Brayshaw and Luke Jackson continues to set the tone, while the forward line is functioning at a level Fremantle fans have waited years to see. Josh Treacy, Jye Amiss and Patrick Voss are all consistently impacting games, creating a multi-pronged attack that is becoming incredibly difficult to defend.

Even with injuries to Alex Pearce, Hayden Young and Corey Wagner, Fremantle still look significantly deeper and more structurally sound than Essendon heading into this matchup.

What to Expect? Here’s Our Best Bet

Fremantle -32.5 shapes as one of the strongest plays of Round 10. The Dockers are simply operating at a completely different level right now and their ability to punish teams defensively looks like a nightmare matchup for Essendon.

The Bombers should have moments through the middle and will likely compete hard early, but Fremantle’s pressure, midfield depth and forward structure should eventually overwhelm them. The Dockers are conceding just 68.8 points per game across their last eight matches while consistently scoring heavily themselves.

Essendon’s inability to stop opposition momentum remains the key concern here. Once teams gain territory against them, scores can pile on rapidly, and Fremantle are one of the best transition teams in the AFL at the moment. With the Dockers playing with enormous confidence and the Bombers still leaking far too many easy scores, Fremantle look well placed to build another strong winning margin on Sunday afternoon.

Essendon vs Fremantle Prop Bet

Josh Treacy continues to emerge as one of the premier power forwards in the competition and this matchup sets up beautifully for him. He has kicked eight goals across his last three games and Essendon’s unsettled key defensive stocks look vulnerable against Fremantle’s deep forward line. The Dockers’ ball movement inside 50 has been elite recently, creating high-quality looks for their talls, and Treacy should get plenty of opportunities again here.

Shai Bolton 1+ Goal | Archie Roberts 25+ Disposals | Caleb Serong 25+ Disposals

Shai Bolton continues to impact the scoreboard consistently for Fremantle and has now kicked goals in five straight matches. His speed and forward pressure make him a constant threat once the Dockers lock the ball inside 50.

Archie Roberts has become one of the competition’s genuine breakout ball winners, posting absurd disposal numbers over the past month with games of 42, 33, 42, 27 and 42. Essendon should again see enough ball across half-back for Roberts to continue accumulating.

Caleb Serong also looks primed for another massive midfield performance. After a couple of quieter weeks by his standards, he returned to form with 28 disposals last week and should thrive again against an Essendon midfield that still allows opposition stars to find plenty of uncontested footy around stoppages and transition.
