The final round of the regular season continues on Friday evening at Cbus Super Stadium, where the Gold Coast Titans host a Dolphins side with plenty still to gain before embarking on the first finals campaign in club history.
The Dolphins have already secured the double chance, but their finishing position remains unresolved. They enter Round 27 just four points of differential ahead of the Roosters, +152 compared with +148, with the Chooks playing South Sydney immediately after this game. That gives Kristian Woolf’s side genuine incentive not simply to bank the victory, but to build as much margin as possible before the Roosters know exactly what they need later in the evening. That makes Dolphins -12.5 my best bet.
Gold Coast have lost five straight and conceded 180 points during that run, while the Dolphins arrive almost at full strength after producing arguably their best win of the season against the Roosters. Selwyn Cobbo is the notable absence with an ankle injury, but Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Jamayne Isaako, Jack Bostock, Herbie Farnworth, Kodi Nikorima and Isaiya Katoa all remain in a formidable backline and spine.
The Titans regain Beau Fermor, but Oliver Pascoe is unavailable through concussion and their season has well and truly run out of steam.

Titans Fade Continues Against South Sydney
Gold Coast’s 42-22 loss to South Sydney last weekend was another performance where the scoreboard told a familiar late season story. The Titans showed patches of attacking threat, but their defence simply could not survive sustained pressure against a side with finals motivation.
South Sydney exploded out of the blocks and had five tries inside the opening 25 minutes, forcing Gold Coast to chase the game almost immediately. The Titans managed to produce points of their own through the afternoon, but they were never realistically in control of the contest.
That made it five successive defeats and continued a defensive collapse that has become impossible to ignore. The Titans have now conceded 180 points across those five matches, an average of 36 per game.
There is still plenty of talent in the side. Keano Kini remains one of the most exciting young fullbacks in the competition, Jayden Campbell can create opportunities from five-eighth and AJ Brimson provides another genuine attacking threat in the centres. Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Moeaki Fotuaika also give Gold Coast enough quality through the middle to compete physically with most opponents. The issue is what happens once the initial resistance breaks.
Gold Coast have been conceding points in clusters. Their edges have struggled to reset, fatigue has become increasingly obvious, and the absence of a settled organising half has hurt their ability to control field position. Lachlan Ilias remains at halfback this week alongside Campbell.
Beau Fermor’s return from a rib injury is a boost, while Sam Verrills comes back onto the bench. However, Pascoe’s concussion means Luke Sommerton starts at hooker, and youngster Sunny Kama is set to make his NRL debut.
This is exactly the wrong opponent for a tiring defensive side. The Dolphins possess one of the most powerful outside back groups in the NRL and have a specific reason to continue attacking even once the result appears safe.
Dolphins Produce Their Biggest Win of the Season
Redcliffe’s 26-12 victory over the Roosters at Allianz Stadium was a massive statement heading into September.
The Dolphins entered facing another top 4 contender on the road and not only won but did so despite spending periods of the second half down to 12 and eventually 11 players. Their scramble defence was outstanding, with Katoa and Bostock combining to force Tommy Talau into touch in the dying stages and seal the result.
That win moved the Dolphins ahead of the Roosters into third and confirmed they are not simply making up the numbers in their first finals appearance.
Katoa’s return over the past month has been particularly important. The Dolphins remained dangerous without him but lacked control late in sets. With Katoa back alongside Nikorima, their attack has far greater structure and the Hammer is receiving the ball in much cleaner situations.
The outside backs create an enormous mismatch this week. Isaako, Bostock, Farnworth and Naufahu can all produce yardage from their own end, while Tabuai-Fidow remains devastating once the game becomes fractured.
Cobbo’s ankle injury is significant, but Naufahu has repeatedly demonstrated he can fill a role without dramatically lowering the side’s attacking ceiling.
The forward pack is also close to full strength. Thomas Flegler and Tom Gilbert start up front, Jeremy Marshall-King controls the ruck and Max Plath, Kulikefu Finefeuiaki and Morgan Knowles provide mobile, high work rate options around them. Francis Molo and Felise Kaufusi add experience from the interchange.
Most importantly for this handicap, the Dolphins cannot simply switch off once they lead by 14. The Roosters play immediately afterwards and begin the round just behind on for and against. The Dolphins therefore have every reason to continue chasing tries.
Titans vs Dolphins Recent History
These teams already met in Round 2, when the Dolphins escaped with an 18-14 victory at Suncorp Stadium. Gold Coast made them work considerably harder than expected that afternoon, with the Dolphins relying on tries to Jake Averillo, Kulikefu Finefeuiaki and Tabuai-Fidow.
Their two 2025 meetings produced much higher scores. The Dolphins won 36-10 at Cbus Super Stadium early in the season before surviving 36-30 at Suncorp late in the year. The Dolphins have actually won all three previous matches played against Gold Coast at Cbus.

Dolphins Have Every Reason to Keep Scoring
Ordinarily, laying -12.5 in the final round against a team with nothing to lose would make me slightly uncomfortable. The ladder situation changes that.
The Dolphins do not simply want two competition points. They want to finish above the Roosters and give themselves the most favourable qualifying final matchup possible. With only four points separating their differentials before Friday night, every late try matters.
Gold Coast’s recent defensive profile makes that especially appealing. They have conceded 180 points in five games and now face a Dolphins backline built to exploit tired defensive systems. Farnworth and Bostock can dominate through contact, the Hammer can attack through the middle and Isaako provides elite finishing and goal kicking.
The previous two visits to Cbus are also encouraging. Redcliffe won 30-14 in 2024 and 36-10 last season. They clearly have no issue travelling down the M1 and playing their attacking football at this venue.
Gold Coast’s path to covering is through their forward pack. If Tino and Fotuaika control Flegler and Gilbert early, Campbell and Kini can generate enough points to keep the margin uncomfortable. There is also always some risk that the Dolphins become more focused on entering finals healthy than chasing an unnecessary late score. But their team list suggests Woolf is not wrapping everyone in cotton wool.
This is essentially their first finals tune up, and a dominant performance would send them into September with enormous confidence.
