Dragons vs Cowboys Predictions & Tips: NRL Round 5 2026
Winless Dragons still searching for answers
The 22-14 road loss to the Titans extended the Dragons winless streak to 4 matches to start the season and again, there were few positive signs for this club to be excited about. Leading 12-6 at HT, they were somewhat hopeful of going on with the performance. Unfortunately, they were limited by a 78% completion rate (51% possession), making 8.6m per carry, and creating just 1 line break over 80 minutes. To make matters worse, they missed considerably more tackles (31 vs 19) and struggled to cover their mistakes. Pressure is growing on their coach also and such efforts never endear themselves to supporting the tenure of the coach to continue. Judgement day could arrive faster than expected if this effort is rectified.
A confidence boosting victory
A strong 28-24 home victory over the Storm has just about erased any memory of a poor performance to start the season. It was a spirited and determined display which saw the Cowboys overcome a 12-point deficit with only 12 minutes remaining. They did this with more possession (51%) and a higher completion rate (albeit, not great – 78%). For them, and most impressively, they won the ‘effort’ statistics. They had more PCM’s, had 9 line breaks, and missed fewer tackles (33 – again, still too high to be successful moving forward). The challenge now is maintaining that standard and using the confidence from that victory in their upcoming fixtures.
Stats that matter
- The Cowboys have won 8 of the past 10 matches against the Dragons. At this ground, the Dragons have won just 46% of matches compare with the Cowboys 44%.
- The average margin of victory in the past 5 matches is 18.6 points; 4 games have seen 18+ victories. The average total points scored is 57.8 points, proving that these fixtures are usually high scoring encounters.
- The Dragons have struggled in attack this season, scoring just 17ppg compared to the Cowboys 23ppg. These two teams are even defensively though, both allowing 28ppg.
D-Day for the Dragons
The home side needs a victory in this match. Winless to start the season, another loss will only increase the pressure on them to perform in coming weeks. With a challenging few matches ahead, they want to take this opportunity against a team which could be vulnerable. If the Cowboys play like they did last week however, they will be difficult for the Dragons to defeat. Form suggests that the visitors should be too strong. Despite losing early matches, some ‘effort’ areas in their play were positive. The Dragons performance against the Titans was also concerning. Failing to score more points than they did in that contest left a lot to be desired. They also have a short turnaround to contend with and look void of answers. Perhaps the home ground advantage will lift their performance but relying on this is not ideal. The line is set relatively low for this match and with the Cowboys improving compared to a stagnant Dragons team, the preferred selection is for the visitors to cover the line and capture victory.

Leg 1 = Total points over 49.5 – see above for justification of this bets inclusion.
Leg 2 = Drinkwater to score – a key man at the back for the Cowboys, Drinkwater is always an attacking threat. He likes playing the Dragons too with 5 tries in his last 5 matches against them.
Leg 3 = Dearden to score – speaking of ‘enjoyment’ when playing the Dragons. Dearden welcomes this opportunity and is likely to score given he has 5 tries in his past 3 games against the m.
