Dolphins vs Sea Eagles Predictions & Tips: NRL Round 5 2026

Still finding their groove

After two consecutive victories, the Dolphins were handed a reality check by the Broncos in their 26-12 defeat. It wasn’t as if they were poor; rather, their opponents were superior in moments which decided the match. Despite having a larger share of possession (54%), they had an inferior completion rate (74%) and were unable to make the most of 9.3m per carry and a massive 720 PCM’s to generate momentum. They let themselves down defensively also by missing 46 tackles. There is no doubt that this is a talented team and hopefully, results like that one continues to serve as learning experiences for this team to improve upon.

Time to put the headlines behind them

It’s been a challenging start to the season for the Sea Eagles, winless to start the year with all 3 losses coming at home. This culminated in the sacking of coach Seibold last Friday, following their 33-16 loss to the Roosters. Now, with Kieran Foran at the helm, they have their work cut out rectifying their slow start to the season. They were always going to struggle against the Roosters with just 42% possession and a 75% completion rate. It mattered little that they averaged 10.3m per carry; they conceded 711 PCM’s, and missed 37 tackles. Continually allowing their opponents to build momentum increased fatigue when it came to attack. There were some interesting comments from this squad following their coach’s departure and that surrounds the playing group taking ownership of their performances.

Stats that matter

- The Sea Eagles have never played the Dolphins at this ground but that doesn’t stop them from having a 100% success rate in their only attempt. The Dolphins win 62% of matches here.

- The Dolphins have been better on both sides of the ball this season. Their attack averages more points (24ppg vs 20ppg) and concedes fewer points defensively (22ppg vs 32ppg).

- These teams have only met three times; two games have been blowout victories to the Sea Eagles, and all have been high scoring matches. The average margin of victory is 24.7 points and the average total points is 72.7 points.

Where to look for a winner?

The circumstances leading into this game for the Sea Eagles creates an interesting diversion away from the form line. A new coach generally sparks a change in performance; that may occur but it’s interesting to note the response of the Manly playing group who have taken responsibility for their poor form which ultimately saw their coach depart. Perhaps, it wasn’t an issue with him, but a lack of talent was the driving factor. On form, the Dolphins should be too strong. The wins they have recorded this year have been positive performances and the chance to return to their ‘spiritual’ home ground will give them plenty to play for. Their attack appears to be growing in confidence and while the Sea Eagles have a capable pack of forwards, it is unknown if they can match their opponents for 80 minutes.

Ultimately, it is best to remember that there are better games to invest on this weekend. So, keep your stake low. As for the desired selection, play on the fact that the visitors will take the field with another level of determination. There have been moments of positivity throughout the season; few teams can score as many points as they did in challenging conditions against the Raiders. The Dolphins are also guilty of defensive lapses and while they should win this game, it might be closer than most think. Therefore, use the large line to your advantage.

Scooby's strength is assessing the overall team - what they offer across the field in a match and how the ethos of a club contributes to their success. Momentum also has a major impact on sports, and Scooby likes to explore this, while underpinning his judgement against a solid basis of statistical analysis. When combined with the aforementioned points, it combines for a holistic approach towards betting on rugby league.
