AFL Round 4 Preview & Betting Tips

West Coast vs Melbourne

Sunday 5:20pm AEST, April 9th, Optus Stadium

Easter Sunday’s night match looks a one-sided affair on paper, with the injury-depleted West Coast Eagles playing hosts to one of the key premiership contenders in the Melbourne Demons. Regardless, it should be a decent spectacle in Perth with little to no rain forecasted at the time of writing.

West Coast fought hard in the Derby last weekend but were extremely unlucky with injuries and played the majority of the last quarter with no rotations. They ended up going down by 41 points against the Dockers but didn’t lose any admirers with their efforts. Still, the Eagles are now 1-2 on the season and it seems as though they’re in for another long, hard campaign.

The Eagles suffered similar luck with injuries last season and are set to be without a number of their key cogs over the next couple of weeks. Jeremy McGovern badly hurt his hamstring last weekend and will miss the best part of three months, and Luke Shuey suffered yet another soft tissue injury and will spend a couple of weeks on the sidelines, while Nic Naitanui still doesn’t have a timeline on his return.

Melbourne suffered a disappointing loss against Brisbane in Round 2 and made sure they came out firing against the Swans last weekend. They looked a completely different team from a week ago and reassured pundits that had them as flag fancies leading into the season. The Demons piled on 134 points in their 50-point win against the Swans, and had 12 different goal scorers.

In more positive news for the Demons, Brodie Grundy looked back to his All-Australian best last weekend when he was assigned with the lion’s share of the ruck duties in Max Gawn’s absence. He gave his midfielders silver service and should be in for another big game against the Eagles who rank last in hit-outs this season.

The odds for this game are extremely one-sided in favour of the Demons and rightly so when you consider the talent each team has at their disposal this weekend. However, the line is a whopping 44.5 and anything can happen when you’re playing with a number that big.

Instead, I’ll be looking to play the unders in the total points market, which has saluted in each of the last four times these teams have met at Optus Stadium. The Eagles are depleted all over the ground, particularly in the forward half, which means the Demons will have to kick a stupendous score to see this one go overs in my opinion.

Melbourne to Win – Adds a little bit of value and they seem to be an absolute lock to win this game.

Christian Petracca 1+ Goals – Doesn’t always hit the scoreboard but will get his chances this weekend. If the Demons get a big lead, I can see him spending more time resting forward as well.

Oscar Allen 1+ Goals – Has looked fantastic in his return to the field this season and is their biggest goal threat along with Jack Darling. I think he’s good for at least one goal here.

Shannon Hurn 25+ Disposals – Averages 8 kick-ins per game which is the most in the competition this season. He’ll get plenty of opportunities to rack up disposals again this weekend with the ball spending its majority of the time down back for the Eagles.
