2024 NRL Round 6 Preview & Betting Tips

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Cronulla Sharks

Accor Stadium – Saturday 13th April – 7:35pm (AEST)

Match Preview

Another week of negative headlines for the Rabbitohs and rightly so following their 34-4 loss to the Warriors at home. Talented enough to win that match, they lacked spirit and execution, leading to loud calls that the coach will be lucky to make it through the next few weeks. They started well by scoring the opening try, but it was one-way traffic from that point onwards. They gave themselves little hope with a shocking 60% completion rate and 16 total errors; this has been an issue for this team for some time. Other ‘effort’ areas were also lacking, with a drastic change needed to successfully move forward.

The Sharks had the Bye in Round 5 to recover from their 36-22 victory over the Raiders in Round 4. Starting that game slowly, they overcame a deficit to lock the scores at 18-all at HT. Playing with increased confidence in the second half and finding their rhythm, the Sharks took their chances. Their defence held strong (23 missed tackles), while they built pressure with clever attacking kicks. It wasn’t an overly convincing performance but one which indicates they are resilient enough to overcome challenges in 80 minutes of rugby league.

Match Prediction

This game looks like an ugly contest from the outset. With all the turmoil at the Rabbitohs, there is every chance that they could come out and ambush the Sharks in this contest. The odds ($3.30 vs $1.34) rightly suggest otherwise but it is a possibility. Reality combats this; the Rabbitohs are without Mitchell (suspended) and Cook (18th man) but there is a lot to like about their incoming players in Gray, Munro & Mamouzelos. They have come through a talented reserve and juniors’ program and will be out to make their mark on the big stage.

The Sharks have no such issues on or off the field and appear well placed to succeed. They are strengthened by the return of Nikora in the second row and could benefit further if Hamlin-Uele is promoted from the reserves as a late inclusion. The Rabbitohs also hold a dominant recent record over the Sharks, winning 5 of their past 6 meetings (average winning margin is 10 points). Combine that with the Sharks poor record here (39% vs Rabbitohs 57%) and the case grows further.

Then again, you must trust your eyes. It would be foolish to invest straight out on a team (Rabbitohs) who concede and average of 32ppg (vs Sharks 18ppg). The point scoring deficiencies of both sides (Rabbitohs 14ppgs vs Sharks 20ppg) suggests that it will be both low scoring and a narrow margin. Use the latter to your advantage.

There is a high amount of risk in this bet, so invest sparingly. Munro makes his first appearance for the season and proved himself to be a try scoring machine last season. Mamouzelos scored 10 tries in the NSW Cup last season and is known to take a chance or two when his team gets close to the line.
