Manchester City have the opportunity to cap off another incredible season by completing the elusive treble on Sunday morning. They’ve already secured both the Premier League and the FA Cup, which leaves just the Champions League to tick off.
Standing in City’s way in the final on Sunday morning (AEST) is Inter Milan. The Black and Blues have enjoyed a terrific Champions League campaign, knocking off a number of top class teams along the way. Although they’ve spent a bit of time in the wilderness, reaching this stage of the UCL is nothing new for this club. Inter are 3x UCL winners and last lifted the cup in the 2009-10 season.
However, all the talk around Sunday’s final is about Manchester City and rightfully so. They’ve been in irresistible form since the turn of the new year and are clearly the most talented team in the world on paper.
City haven’t lost a single game in this tournament on route to the final and they’ve played a number of world class clubs in recent outings. Most notably, the Premier League champs have destroyed both Real Madrid (5-1) and Bayern Munich (4-1) in the knockout stages.
Securing a major European trophy is one thing this fantastic side has failed to do despite arguably being the best team in the world for the past five seasons. And winning it for the first time after all the success they've already achieved this season could see them go down as the best team in history.
City have made a habit of scoring early in recent matches and it took them only 15 seconds to get on the score board in their recent FA Cup win against Manchester United. I expect them to get on the front foot early again in the UCL final and register a wire-to-wire win.
