With today's Werribee meeting abandoned, we focus on the racing at Scone and Corowa. Find our best bets for each track below, courtesy of Luke Krahe.
There are a lot of unknowns here from those on debut but I am confident that what we have seen at two starts from (1) Free Rider, he looks a good thing and our banker for the day. The Paul Messara trained gelding resumed here at his home track late in 2019, was slowly away and settled in the second-half of the field. He improved between runners approaching the straight and ran on hard to be beaten under half a length into second. He did have his chance to run them down but was very heavily backed, I expect the same today. They have opened him black figures and unless there is some serious money for one of the debutants, he should start well in the red.
I like to target these Class 1 and maiden races over the middle distance. (1) Nitty Gritty has had three runs this prep, placed over an unsuitable 900m in an easier race resuming before coming here to Corowa second-up. He was poorly away stepping up to the 7 furlongs and was a clear last early. He got very wide and worked home nicely to narrowly miss the placings in a race where it was favourable to be up on the speed. Last time at Echuca in a 0-58, he was again slowly away and over-raced early. He worked into the race well from a mile back, hit the line well again laying in up the straight. I like the way he has hit the line at the last couple and just needs to begin better and not get so far back. There looks to be a little bit of speed on paper which should give every horse their chance. This looks no harder.
