We have a cracking contest on our hands on Friday night in the NBL as the Perth Wildcats host Melbourne United at RAC Arena. The Wildcats have had the stronger start to the season of the two clubs, although it’s the travelling United who are currently priced as the narrow favourites to come away with a win.

Perth Wildcats Welcome Back Doolittle
Perth’s four-game winning streak ended with a 102-81 loss to Sydney, but Kristian Doolittle’s return gives them a much better chance of responding at home. They missed his scoring and passing against the Kings, and having him back should take some pressure off Brandon Knight as he settles into the side.
The news on Jo Lual-Acuil Jr is much less encouraging. He has been out since injuring his calf against New Zealand in Round 2 and, following a setback, won’t be reassessed until after the November FIBA break. That leaves Perth without an important scoring option and defensive presence around the basket for a lengthy stretch. Against Melbourne’s size, his absence could be particularly costly.
Elijah Pepper will also be keen to respond after going scoreless against Sydney. Before that, he had scored exactly 25 points in four consecutive games, all home wins. Back at RAC Arena with Doolittle returning, there is good reason to expect a better night from him.
Melbourne United Need to Stop Playing Catch-Up
Melbourne’s 3-4 record is disappointing for a side with this much talent. Sunday’s 91-89 loss to Illawarra was their third defeat by two points, but it was also another game where they left themselves too much to do. United fell 16 points behind and couldn’t finish the comeback, despite collecting 19 offensive rebounds.
Jacob Chance has called for more consistent urgency, and it’s hard to argue with him. Recent wins over Adelaide and South East Melbourne showed what United can do, but their intensity keeps dropping for costly stretches. They cannot expect to keep recovering from those lapses, especially in Perth.
Chris Goulding remains out, but Cole Anthony and Joe Ingles give Melbourne enough creativity to keep the offence moving. Josh Oduro could be the biggest beneficiary here. His strength around the basket and ability to compete for offensive rebounds make this an inviting matchup against Perth’s undermanned frontcourt. United should be looking to get him involved early and often.
Wildcats vs United Betting Tips
I’m backing Melbourne, with Oduro a big part of the appeal. Without Lual-Acuil to contend with, he has a chance to do real damage inside. Feeding him around the basket should force Perth to commit extra help, creating opportunities for United’s guards as well.
Doolittle’s return makes the assignment tougher, and Perth’s home form deserves respect. Melbourne need to keep the Wildcats out of transition and finish defensive possessions with a rebound. Giving away easy points would only make a difficult trip harder.
United haven’t been consistent enough to back without some reservations, but I like this matchup for them. They have the size to trouble Perth and the playmakers to take advantage of it. I’m backing Melbourne to put together a better performance and leave with the win.
