Cranbourne will host Friday night racing this week and despite it being the undercard to the main event on Saturday, 2026 Caulfield Cup, it is a pretty handy program for early on in the night racing season. There are 8 races on the card and the first race starts at 6:15pm (AEDT).
With lovely weather around this weekend, the track should stay in the Good range.
The maidens start us off but my three best bets are later on in the evening, with the first tip a short-priced favourite who can hopefully get us rolling.

Cranbourne Racing Tips: Friday, October 16th 2026
Race 5: VTR Medical Handicap 1400m - 8:15pm (AEDT)
(8) Ranarsson is short but looks the goods in this event after he impressed when leading all of the way here on September 25. Smart punters got the money on that occasion ($11.00) but there is none of that here with the Hayes team and Ben Melham combining again. Having barrier 2 should help him lead again and his maiden win was in fast time so he should be able to set the race up from the front again.
(3) Empressive Enough is experienced and likes Dry ground. He worked home nicely last start to only lose by 1L when 3rd and barrier 4 should ensure he positions up nicely again in around 4th spot. Over the odds at $19.00,
(5) The Volta has drawn a bit wide in 10 but usually goes back and puts in one long run at the end. Cranbourne can be leader biased at times which is the issue.
(8) Ranarsson WIN
$1.60 (3 Units)
Race 7: Freeway Ford Handicap 1600m - 9:15pm (AEDT)
(6) Crocodile for the in-form Maher stable gets the nod after a string of placings in his return from a spell. He is racing consistently and his the front with 100m to go at Ballarat last start but found one better when 2nd. He is 100 percent fit now and a second look over the mile should be a positive.
(4) Miss Castelvecchio drops in class for this. The mare sat on speed last start at Mornignton and held her position up the straight. She has beaten a few of these runners previously and from barrier 3 she should be on speed again.
(9) Hedjet led all of the way when odds on in an easier race last start. Ben Melham has had 2 starts on top for a first and second and he should be very fit now after a number jumpouts during the winter.
(6) Crocodile WIN
$3.50 (2 Units)
Race 8: Hygain Edge Handicap 1200m - 9:45pm (AEDT)
(8) Hustle In Heels for Julius Sandhu is going well and gets the 3kg claim. She is resuming from a spell and she usually goes very well when fresh. She has won her latest 2 Cranbourne trials and Dry ground suits. She was 4th at this track before her spell but had to carry 59.5kg. Light weight here and she knows this track very well.
(10) Crank is an interesting runner from the Freedman yard who has been jumping out well. He is resuming and he has already won a race from 2 starts. Is lightly raced but has had a lot of education at the jumpouts.
(12) Simply Steffi has drawn wide in 13 but she has been racing well in tougher races than this. She was unlucky last start and Ben Melham knows her well.
(8) Hustle In Heels WIN
$4.60 (1 Unit)
