A-League 2026-27: Matchweek 1 Preview & Betting Tips
Sydney FC vs Western Sydney Wanderers
Allianz Stadium, Friday 16 October, 8:00pm AEDT
Sydney FC begin their campaign with a derby that has a little more spice than usual. Former Sydney coach Ufuk Talay returns to Allianz Stadium in charge of the Wanderers, facing a side that reached last season’s Grand Final under his replacement, Patrick Kisnorbo. That finish gives the Sky Blues something to build on, while a full preseason has given Kisnorbo more time to put his stamp on the team. For the players who flourished after his arrival, this is also a chance to make a point against their former boss.
The Wanderers are looking for a fresh start after finishing bottom last season. Talay’s arrival and the return of Nicolas Milanovic provide reasons for optimism, with Milanovic adding a proven attacking threat. There is still a gap between looking stronger on paper and producing consistent performances, though. An opening trip to face last season’s beaten grand finalists should tell us plenty about how far Western Sydney have come.
Sydney won the most recent derby 2–0, and we’re backing them to get the better of the Wanderers again. Western Sydney should offer more this season, but the Sky Blues showed during their run to the Grand Final that they could handle big occasions under Kisnorbo. Home advantage adds to their appeal, with a strong start sure to get the crowd involved. Expect a competitive contest, with Sydney doing enough to open their season with three points.

Auckland FC vs Melbourne City
Go Media Stadium, Saturday 17 October, 3:00pm AEDT
Auckland begin their championship defence against a familiar opponent, having knocked Melbourne City out on penalties in last season’s elimination final. Plenty has changed since that successful finals campaign. Pedro Moreira has taken charge of a squad that has lost important contributors including Jesse Randall, Guillermo May, Louis Verstraete and Dan Hall. Sam Cosgrove is available after serving his suspension through National League fixtures, and he and Lachie Brook remain dangerous attacking options. Even so, replacing that much quality across the pitch makes this a challenging league opener for the champions.
City have made some eye-catching additions, with Awer Mabil and Emiliano Marcondes giving their attack a different look. Matheus Rossetto also adds experience and composure in midfield, where City will need to cope with Auckland’s physical pressure. Improving their attacking output was a priority during the offseason, and their recruitment gives them reason to expect better returns. Friendly wins over Newcastle and Oakleigh Cannons have provided encouragement, although this will be a much sterner test.
Winning in Auckland is a tough assignment, but we like City’s chances of an opening-round upset. Their last meeting finished 1–1 after extra time before Auckland prevailed in the shootout, and City’s additions could help them turn a tight contest their way this time. Cosgrove’s availability is a boost for the hosts, so the visitors cannot afford cheap turnovers or lapses at set pieces. There is enough creativity in City’s new-look side to trouble the champions, and we’re backing them to take their opportunity.

Central Coast Mariners vs Newcastle Jets
polytec Stadium, Saturday 17 October, 7:40pm AEDT
Central Coast open their season with an F3 Derby and plenty of questions to answer. John Hutchinson has taken over a side that finished ninth, with extensive squad changes leaving him to bring together a young group. Preparation has been uneven, with Hutchinson openly critical of some preseason performances as he works to establish greater consistency. A derby should sharpen the focus, but the Mariners need their new combinations to click quickly against opponents capable of punishing mistakes.
Newcastle arrive after a 3–1 home defeat to Gamba Osaka in the AFC Champions League Elite. The result was disappointing, although the Jets were level until the 73rd minute against strong opposition. Nikos Vergos opened the scoring, providing encouragement from their new striker ahead of the domestic campaign. The four-day turnaround will test their squad, with Will Dobson doubtful after a shoulder injury and Mark Milligan indicating changes are likely. Still, Newcastle have recent competitive football behind them and only a short trip to Gosford.
The Jets won the most recent meeting 4–0, although both squads have changed since then and a repeat cannot be taken for granted. Central Coast still look vulnerable as Hutchinson works to bring his side together, giving Newcastle an opportunity to start their league campaign with a win. The visitors will need to manage the turnaround, but we’re backing them to make better use of their chances and take advantage of the Mariners’ unsettled combinations. Newcastle to claim the derby honours.
