2026/27 A-League Season Preview & Betting Tips
Grand Final Winner
Auckland showed last season that finishing first isn’t essential to winning the championship. They came from third to beat Sydney FC one nil in the Grand Final, while Newcastle’s impressive regular season ended in semi final disappointment. The challenge is building a side that can reach the finals and produce its best football when everything is on the line.
The defending champions deserve respect, but Auckland have plenty to overcome. Pedro Moreira replaces Steve Corica, while Jesse Randall and Guillermo May leave significant holes in attack. Losing midfielder Louis Verstraete and centre back Dan Hall also weakens the spine of their title winning side. Sam Cosgrove remains a dangerous focal point, but a new coach and several important departures make them a tougher proposition to back this time around.
Newcastle have lost much of the attacking threat that made them so entertaining. Eli Adams, Clayton Taylor and Lachlan Rose are major departures, leaving Mark Milligan with combinations to rebuild. Joe Lolley and Nikos Vergos bring proven quality, but expecting everything to click immediately would be optimistic. Their seven to one Champions League Elite defeat against Kashima Antlers was a rough introduction to a campaign that will test their squad depth.
Sydney FC’s defensive record makes them hard to dismiss. They conceded only 25 regular season goals, fewer than anyone else, before reaching the Grand Final. That ability to keep opponents quiet is valuable in knockout football. However, Lolley’s departure and Victor Campuzano’s ACL injury put pressure on new striker Oriola Sunday to settle quickly. Patrick Kisnorbo has a solid foundation, but finding enough goals could determine whether Sydney can go one better.
Melbourne Victory have changed direction under Giovanni Savarese, with May adding quality to their attack. Juan Mata’s departure leaves a sizeable creative gap, though, and replacing his influence won’t be easy. Their Australia Cup final loss to South Melbourne on penalties was disappointing, but reaching the decider still provided useful competitive preparation. I wouldn’t dismiss them because of one shootout, although there is work ahead for the new coach.
Melbourne City are the side I lean towards. Sixth place and just 33 regular season goals weren’t good enough, but their recruitment gives them a chance to improve. Awer Mabil brings pace, Emiliano Marcondes can create openings and Matheus Rossetto adds midfield quality. Max Caputo scored eight league goals last season and should benefit from better service. Keeping Aurelio Vidmar also offers continuity while several rivals adjust to new coaches.
There are concerns, particularly the departures of goalkeeper Patrick Beach and centre back German Ferreyra. City need to get those defensive combinations right, but their attacking additions give them plenty of upside. Macarthur are an interesting outsider after signing Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Ryan Fraser, while Adelaide must replace joint Golden Boot winner Luka Jovanovic. In a race with questions surrounding every contender, City’s potential improvement in attack is enough to win me over. They are my pick to bounce back and make a serious run at the championship.

Top Goalscorer
Sam Cosgrove is the obvious starting point after sharing last season’s Golden Boot with Luka Jovanovic on 11 regular season goals. He is available for the opening round after Auckland confirmed his suspension had already been served. That helps his chances, although the departures of Randall and May mean the combinations around him will change.
Max Caputo is another contender after scoring eight league goals for City, particularly with Mabil and Marcondes now supplying him. However, my preference is Macarthur recruit Apostolos Stamatelopoulos. His 17 goals in 25 league appearances for Newcastle in 2023/24 showed he can challenge without playing for a dominant side.
His Sydney loan last season was less convincing, producing two goals in 10 regular season appearances, or three in 14 including finals. He needs to improve considerably on that return, so this selection relies on him rediscovering his best form.
A fresh start at Macarthur gives him that opportunity. Fraser offers quality service from wide areas, and a full campaign gives Stamatelopoulos time to build those connections. Regular starts and fitness will be crucial, but his Newcastle spell showed the scoring ability is there. If Macarthur can get him firing again, he can give this market a real shake.
