It's the Wimbledon Champ taking on last week's Philadelphia Challenger Champ, as Linda Noskova takes on Katie Volynets for a place in the US Open 2nd Round.
It is obviously an amazing result for Noskova to win Wimbledon, however with that comes pressure and expectation moving forward, particularly at Grand Slam level. No longer can you float under the radar, as there is a target on your back. I don't think we have seen the best of Noskova over the course of the US hardcourt swing, and I do wonder if the market perhaps hasn't entirely caught up to that fact as yet.
Katie Volynets was utterly dominant in Philadelphia last week, and she comes in as a tricky style of player for someone like Noskova, who is capable of playing lights-out tennis, but also capable of producing a very high rate of unforced errors, In this spot, with the home crowd at her back, I like Volynets to be competitive in this one. The higher probability selections would be Volynets + games or Volynets to win a set, however I think there is a little more value in the American to cause the upset in this one.
If Noskova produces a high winner to unforced error ratio, then I will tip my cap and accept the loss. On what I have seen since Wimbledon though, I am happy to bet against it at the current price.
