Match Preview

Despite resting some senior players, Collingwood produced a stirring performance to beat the Dockers out west in Round 9. The win took the Magpies to 7-2 and saw them sitting in second place on the ladder at the completion of Round 9.

The 14 point win was built on a remarkably efficient performance by Collingwood's forwards, who scored 15.7.97 from just 34 inside 50s’. The Pies turned 64.7% of their inside 50’s into scores, and 44.1% of their inside 50’s resulted in a goal. Jamie Elliott led the way with 6 goals, while Bobby Hill chipped in with 3 goals.

Collingwood have recalled Brayden Maynard, Scott Pendlebury and Brody Mihocek after they were rested against Fremantle. Darcy Moore (shoulder), Lachie Schultz (concussion) and Oleg Markov (omitted) come out of the side.

Adelaide established their spot in the top eight with a five point win in a thrilling Showdown clash. Izak Rankine produced in a match defining minute, kicking consecutive goals as a part of a three goal run by the Crows that got them out to a 20 point lead. Adelaide shut up shop in the final 8 minutes which nearly led to their downfall, however the Crows hung on in a frantic finish.

This matchup pits the number one defence in the competition against the second highest scoring team in the AFL. Collingwood has held opponents to an average score of just 70 points, and haven’t conceded over 91 points since their Opening Round defeat to GWS.

Adelaide have averaged 102 points per game this season, with five scores of 100+ and seven scores of 89+. The Crows have six players that have kicked 11 or more goals this season, led by Riley Thilthorpe’s 23 goals which has him equal third in the Coleman Medal race.

The clearance battle will also be crucial in this clash, with the Pies ranking seventh in the competition and Adelaide ranking eighth. If Collingwood win the clearance battle, it will allow their pressure game to get going, which is one of the best in the league. The Magpies rank fourth in the AFL for tackles, fourth for pressure acts and seventh for tackles inside 50. This has led to Collingwood ranking third in the league for scores from turnover and fourth for scores from forward half.

The big challenge for Collingwood will be containing Adelaide’s key forwards, given their  lack of height in defence. Billy Frampton, Jeremy Howe and Bayden Maynard will have the task of matching up on Riley Thilthorpe, Darcy Fogarty and Taylor Walker. The Pies will need pressure on the ball further up the ground to ensure they aren’t exposed to many one on one contests.

This has all the elements to be one of the best games of the season, between two sides who play different styles, but nonetheless have shown the capability to be genuine contenders in 2025.

Collingwood have a proven track record of knowing how to win, while last week showed the Crows have a way to go with their late game execution. The Magpies have won nine consecutive games against Adelaide, one of the longest streaks against one side in the AFL. The last four games between the two teams have been thrilling encounters however, with the games being decided by 4, 2, 1 and 5 points.

Adelaide haven’t beaten Collingwood at the MCG since 2014, and if the Pies can play the game in their front half, their pressure game will enable their defence to contain the Crows key forwards. The Pies will continue their run of close wins over Adelaide.
