One of the best days on the betting calendar, the NFL Super Bowl, is just around the corner! The game will take place this Monday (AEDT) between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams and promises to be a thrilling affair. One of the main reasons why the Super Bowl is so fun to bet on is the sheer number of novelty and prop betting markets available to punters. On Super Bowl day, punters can back anything from the length of the pre-game national anthem to the colour of the sports drink thrown on the head coach! Today we take a look at some of our favourite novelty and prop bets for the big game below.
Known as the ‘Empress of Soul’, seven-time Grammy Award winner Gladys Knight will do the honour of singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl this year. There’s no denying that renditions of the Star-Spangled Banner have been getting longer and longer throughout the years but the bookies have set quite a high line this year, and Knight is a traditionalist.
The line currently sits at 111.5 seconds and with a little digging it’s easy to source a rendition Knight performed back in 1991. Back then, the anthem took her just 92 seconds to belt out, leaving her almost a full 20 seconds up her sleeve. We think this is an easy UNDER call here.
Some quick research shows that the Patriots last two Super Bowl wins against Atlanta and Seattle have resulted in one clear/white dump and one blue dump. Last year, the Eagles went left field and had a green Gatorade dump, the first of that colour we have seen in a while. We are tipping the Patriots to win here so we have to stick with the value that blue holds!
Maroon 5 are slated to perform the half time show and my favourite bet of the day comes from their performance, their first song in particular. I think this is almost a lock to be their 2017 hit ‘What Lovers Do’ featuring SZA. Bands performing at the Super Bowl never want to unveil their timeless classics right off the bat, but they like to start with a well-known song, which is what this is. The song also has an introduction that emphasizes crowd participation with clapping to the beat and one that wouldn’t suit being transitioned into later in the set.
Maroon 5’s hit ‘Girls Like You’ was one of the biggest songs of 2018. It was the 14th most streamed song on Spotify and features one of the most popular artists in all of hip/hop at the moment, Cardi B. There is usually some type of secondary act at the Super Bowl and we think there’s a strong possibility that Cardi performs Girls Like You with Maroon 5 and potentially one of her own songs too. Cardi B is performing in Atlanta on SAturday night, the night before the Super Bowl, coincidence?
