EPL 2026-27: Matchday 3 Preview & Betting Tips
Newcastle vs Bournemouth
St James' Park, Saturday 5th September, 9:30pm AEST
Bournemouth will be looking to get their first win of the season when they head to St James’ Park to play Newcastle. It’s been an underwhelming start to the season for the Cherries who finished 6th last season, with just one point from two games after their 1-1 draw against Everton. On the other side, Newcastle have overcome a turbulent off-season to start with four points from the first fortnight after their 2-0 win over Tottenham on Matchday 2.
Newcastle have scored four goals across their first two games, with their efficiency in the front third a major strength. On Matchday 1 they lost the shot count 25-12 and only had 40% possession and they managed to score 2 goals, on Matchday 2 they lost the shot count 16-7 and only had 42% possession. Bournemouth last week were unable to make the most of their dominance of possession, which could leave them vulnerable against a Newcastle outfit that has had success on the counter this season.
This game looms as both teams coming back to the mean from their output - Newcastle have overperformed their statistical output, while Bournemouth have underperformed. Although Newcastle have been very successful absorbing pressure and producing on the counter, it isn’t a sustainable long term system. These two sides have played in five draws from their last eight Premier League matchups against each other. These two sides have already played in a draw this season, and all roads point towards another deadlock.
Everton vs Manchester United
Hill Dickinson Stadium, Sunday 6th September, 11:00pm AEST
Everton host Manchester United on Sunday evening, as both sides look for their second win of the season. The Toffees picked up a win against Crystal Palace on Matchday 1 and followed it up with a 1-1 draw in an underwhelming performance against Bournemouth. Manchester United bounced back from a shock loss to Hull, with a 5-2 rout of Ipswich Town thanks to a Bruno Fernandes hattrick, finally able to break down a low block that they couldn’t manage to do the week prior.
Across their opening two games the Red Devils have produced a league high 34 shots on goal, as well as an average of 66% possession which is the third most in the league. Everton will provide a bigger challenge than the two newly promoted opponents they’ve faced, so United’s ability to capitalise on their attacking opportunities will be further tested on Sunday.
The blueprint for Everton is clear, get plenty of numbers deep into midfield and defence and deny Manchester United any space in their attacking third. This has been a method that has worked against the Red Devils for a long time, and one that has already been fruitful this season. Everton have been good defensively so far this season, conceding just one goal and although they may not be able to keep United out for 90 minutes, this game should lean to being a low scoring affair.

Arsenal vs Chelsea
Emirates Stadium, Monday 7th September, 1:30am AEST
The two biggest clubs in London face off in a blockbuster clash on Monday, with both Arsenal and Chelsea starting the season with two wins. Chelsea have played in two thrillers to start life under Xabi Alonso, with a 3-2 win over Fulham backed up with a 4-3 win over Brighton. Arsenal produced a typical Arsenal performance last week, grinding their way to a 1-0 win over Aston Villa in an uneventful encounter, headlined by possession dominance and defensive structure.
The Gunners were the best defence in the league last season and are one of only two teams to have not conceded a goal through the opening fortnight of the season. Chelsea have been a brilliant attacking side having scored an equal league high seven goals, so the battle between Arsenal’s defence and Chelsea’s attack looms as the crucial factor in this game. The other glaring factor is Chelsea’s inability to defend across 90 minutes, which is a big concern coming up against the defending champions
There’s a lot more trust in Arsenal’s ability to defend than there is in Chelsea’s ability to continue their red hot goal scoring form. The Gunners have an excellent recent record against Chelsea, having not lost a league fixture to the West London side since 2021. Across the last five years they have a 6-4-0 record against Chelsea, with Chelsea only managing to score more than one goal on two occasions. Arsenal have a 16-2-2 record at the Emirates since the start of last season, and they will extend their winning record.
