Series Preview

After taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the T20 series, England squandered the final two games to tie the series 2-2 with the Kiwis. While the tied series may have indicated two evenly matched teams, the games themselves were anything but that, with all four clashes being won pretty convincingly.

The home side have some talent being injected into the squad for the four match series as they look to nail down their best ODI XI and iron out any kinks before the upcoming ICC World Cup. ODI stalwarts Joe Root and Jason Roy should slot back into the top order while all-rounder Ben Stokes has rescinded his 50-over retirement in a bid to secure a place in the World Cup squad.

The fast bowling contingent gets a big shake up for the 50-over format, with Reece Topley, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes all making their way into the squad.

There are so many different combinations this England squad could go with when you consider the amount of talented all-roudners they have. Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes all have a strong claim to be selected in the side, so it’ll be incredible interesting to see which way they go.

Predicted England Best XI: Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, Mark Wood, David Willey, Reece Topley, Abdil Rashid

The Kiwi side is a touch easier to predict in the lead up to the series and to the World Cup itself outside of a few key selection questions. The batting will look pretty similar to the line-up that competed in the T20s, with the obvious inclusion of current ODI skipper Tom Latham.

The pace bowling unit is where the Kiwis really thrive. Trent Boult will be a massive call-up to the team to pair with an already strong attack that includes any combination of Adam Milne, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson.

Betting Tips

I actually think the Kiwis will be super competitive in this series. They found their groove in the final two T20 matches and I think they will be a little less experimental with their line-up across the four games than England, who will likely be trying four completely different line-ups to see what works. There are no series odds to speak of at the moment, but I love the value for New Zealand to kick off this series with a win after carrying some momentum from the T20s.
