Match Preview
The Dolphins returned to form last week with a grinding 20-16 win over the Eels on the road. Overcoming an inferior share of possession (48%) they completed amazingly well (89%) to build relentless pressure on their opponents. This allowed them to average 9.9m per carry, make 623 PCM’s and 5 line breaks. They have a lot to improve upon defensively though, missing 37 tackles and conceding 7 line breaks.
The Warriors extended their winning streak to 4-games with a close 15-14 win over the Dragons in Wollongong. Despite a strong first half (14-4 HT lead), they struggled for points in the second half and missed several chances. Much like the Dolphins, their poise and disciplined helped (52% possession and 92% completion rate). They carried the ball strongly (9.2m per carry) and had slightly more PCM’s. Their victory was also underpinned by their defensive effort; they missed just 23 tackles for the match.
This game appears to be a tight contest. The 2nd-place Warriors (on form) should be far shorter against an opponent placed 12th on the ladder in the Dolphins. Unfortunately, the visitors have just a 32% record here (Dolphins 50%) and they have been on the road for 4 weeks (Round 8 was in Christchurch). Even three consecutive weeks traveling across the Tasman, on the back of a trip to Vegas, is expected to take its toll. They are boosted by the return of Fisher-Harris and RTS (possible late inclusion), meanwhile, the Dolphins are unchanged. The attacking (Dolphins 23ppg vs Warriors 21ppg) and defensive (Dolphins 22ppg vs Warriors 20ppg) provides further evidence that there is little between these two sides.
If forced to decide, fatigue is bound to impact the Warriors; however, there are safer betting options this weekend for punter to invest upon. Despite the average margin of victory in their 4 total meetings sitting at 13 points, a closer match is expected in this contest. For what it’s worth, the past two meetings have been decided by 2 and 4 points respectively.
