Three consecutive losses has dashed the Strikers finals hopes, with a horror batting performance against the Stars putting the final nail in the coffin. The Strikers were bowled out for 83 on Tuesday, only Liam Scott (18) and Cameron Boyce (20) reached double figures, in what was an embarrassing performance. The Strikers nearly batted their full allotment of overs, but scored at just 4.26 an over.
Batting has been a massive issue for the Strikers this season, being held to less than 166 runs in six of their nine games this season. Liam Scott and Matt Short are the only Strikers batters to have made above 152 runs this season, with the Strikers middle order struggling this season. Jamie Overton (90), Mackenzie Harvey (60 runs), Jerrssis Wadia (52) and Harry Manenti (47) have all averaged under 12 with the bat this season, a big reason why the Strikers haven’t made match winning scores.
The area of the game the Strikers will have confidence is with the ball, given the Renegades batting unit. Lloyd Pope (13) sits eighth amongst the leading wicket takers, while Jamie Overton (12), Hasan Ali (8) and Luke Wood (8) are all inside the top 21 wicket takers in BBL15.
Melbourne Renegades
Another underwhelming all round performance officially ended the Renegades season on Thursday, with a 50 run defeat against the Scorchers. The Renegades bowling attack was taken to the cleaners as the scores piled on 7/219 at Marvel Stadium. Gurinder Sandhu (15.67), Will Sutherland (11.75) and Hassan Khan (11.33) all went at over 11 runs an over, and only took one wicket between them.
The Renegades never looked a chance in the chase with Tim Seifert (66 off 43) and Jake Fraser McGurk (42 off 18) the only batters to reach 20, as the Renegades only managed 7/169 from their 20 overs. Muhammad Rizwan failed to contribute once again, dismissed for 3, with the Pakistani scoring just 170 runs at an average of 18.88 in nine games this season, striking at just 101.19 - returns that just aren’t good enough from a star import.
After starting the season well, the Renegades bowling attack has dropped off significantly, becoming one of the most expensive attacks in the league. Gurinder Sandhu has conceded 10.48 runs an over, Jason Behrendorff has conceded 9.29 and Will Sutherland has conceded 9.08. When your three most used bowlers are going at over nine an over, you have no chance of contending for a finals place.
Match Prediction
Both teams come into this game with nothing to gain but pride, both teams are coming into this clash on a three game losing streak and both teams have a 3-6 record. Having the home ground advantage will be crucial for the Strikers and their bowling attack coming up against an underperforming Renegades batting unit will be the facet of the game that swings the game in their favour.
If Matt Short and Liam Scott get going, the Strikers bowling attack should have enough runs to work with. It’s impossible to have any belief in the Renegades putting up a match winning score, and their bowling attack has conceded 10.95, 9.13 and 10.73 runs per over in their last three games. The Strikers have won five in a row at the Adelaide Oval against the Renegades, and they’ll finish their season with a win.
