There hasn’t been much to write about in the opening games of the 2015 Cricket World Cup, but finally we’re given a contest which holds some sort of competitive interest as a massive crowd is expected at the MCG on Sunday to see India take on South Africa.
We’ve chosen not to get too involved with the one-sided contests so far in the World Cup, but this match offers an opportunity that we’re going to take advantage of.
South Africa haven’t set the world on fire as yet. They lost a warm up match against New Zealand and then struggled to get things going against lowly Zimbabwe. Looking at this form line and New Zealand have been nothing but dominant, and Zimbabwe have proven themselves to be competitive, so perhaps their form isn’t as bad on paper as it might seem.
Compared to India who have been horrible all summer in Australia, but got a big win against arch-rivals Pakistan. How does that form stack up? Well, Pakistan were thrashed by the West Indies who were earlier beaten by Ireland. It’s fair to say that Pakistan aren’t going too well.
So it’s a classic case of misleading form lines which provide us with some value in this match.
South Africa are the class team of this competition and while India will probably be happy to not be facing Australia in front of 90,000 fans at the MCG, their fate might just end up along the same path. The track will be hard and fast, thanks to warm weather in Melbourne, and that will suit the South African pace attack, while their top order batsmen will be desperate to cut loose.
