New Jersey Devils vs Carolina Hurricanes (Monday 8am AEDT)
Monday's game features two teams chasing a Wild Card position in the Eastern Conference, the New Jersey Devils and the Carolina Hurricanes. Both teams can edge one step closer to a Play Off position with a win in this contest and they will be hungry to do so after coming off a loss last week; The 19th placed Devils went down 0-1 against Washington whilst the 20th seeded Hurricanes lost in overtime to the New York Islanders.
The visiting New Jersey Devils have not been able to find the back of the net as much as they would have liked to this season. They sit second to last in Goals out of any team in the NHL (169) and as the great Wayne Gretzky famously said, "You miss 100% of the shots that you don't take." The Devils need to lift their Shots Per Game from a dismal 24.5 and try to build an early lead against the Hurricanes, who have the most experience heading to Over Time out of all teams in the league.
The Carolina Hurricanes have produced a mixed bag of results so far this season and like the Devils, need some consistency to build within their game, and fast. Their 3-2-5 record over the past 10 games is nothing to write home about, yet they are quite effective when they have a good amount of possession with the puck. Winning 54.4% of Face Offs per game is a huge contributor to this fact, and also having the 5th best Penalty Killing Percentage in the NHL should limit the Devils already low number of scoring chances even when they have the one man advantage.
One factor that may throw a spanner in the works of a win at home for Carolina is that on 10 different occasions, the Devils have managed to take home the two points after the opposing team scored first in the game. Even with this being the case, the Hurricanes should pull through on home ice for the win to continue their Wild Card search.
