Group 1 racing once again in Brisbane this weekend with an 8 race card at Doomben headlined by the Tatts Tiara.

The track is currently rated a Soft 5 but with fine weather predicted for the rest of Friday and Saturday, we should see that upgraded to a Good 4 at some stage.

Doomben Racing Tips for Saturday, 24th of June

Race 1

A couple I'm interested in here to start the day. I had CRUISING SPEED a pretty clear top pick with Jeff Lloyd on board. He trialled well leading into his first up run at the Gold Coast where he ran 2nd by less than half-a-length, but he tends to improve sharply 2nd up from a spell. He's won two of his three races when 2nd up, and he's got a good record at the track and distance. Set to peak and with the minimum weight, he just needs the track to be in the Good range and a good ride from the wide barrier. Happy to take the $4.60 available. I do think there's two at pretty good odds to include too. GLENDARA ran 9th of 13 in the same race as Cruising Speed first up, but he always needs his first up run. From 8 first up starts he's only finished in the money at two of them, but from 5 second up runs he has won twice and placed twice. So I'm expecting pretty sharp improvement from him too, and he gets a good draw and a leading apprentice on. It won't bother him whether it's Good or Soft, and he's placed in three of his five runs over track and distance. At $26 I definitely want to have something on him. The other at $26 that is worth including is CASHING UP. He's had two runs back from a spell at the Sunshine Coast and finished 3rd on both occasions. Has won two of his three starts when 3rd up and placed at the other, so he's another that looks set to peak here. Much harder race, but worth including in exotics from the good draw.

Tip: Cruising Speed / Glendara EW (Best Value)

Race 2

Relatively weak field here. At the prices I'm prepared to forgive the run of LADY LARK first up where she drew wide and had to go back in a harder race. She had no hope from where she was but she finished off reasonably. From the good draw and with the small field she won't be far off them and her form last prep was good enough to suggest she can win this at$5.50. Obviously the horse to beat is PRETTY FAST for the Snowden stable. He finished 4th in that same race, will find this much easier, draws well and gets the blinkers on for the first time so there's no knock on him. One to include is MISHANI WRANGLER for the red-hot Ben Currie stable with Jeff Lloyd on board.

Tip: Lady Lark

Race 3

Don't like the price about CELLARGIRL but I also don't like anything to beat her. She was pretty dominant resuming from a spell last start when winning by 1.8L, with a few of these runners behind her. She carries top weight here but no more than 1.5kg more than the other runners, so with the good draw she should just be too good. The only ones I could consider outside of her would be SHE'S OUR STAR and RED HOT MISS.

Tip: Cellargirl

Race 4

Nice race this with a few good hopes. I'm with DOUBLE SUPERLATIVE here at his third run back from a spell. He was unlucky last start when caught wide the entire trip but still managed to run on strongly and finish 4th, beaten 0.7L, but those two runs should have him right at his peak for this. He's never won first up or second up from 7 starts, but he's won his only start when third up from a spell, and that was over this track and distance. Lloyd takes the ride, hard to beat. EAT MY TRUST has won both starts at the Gold Coast this prep easily. This is harder than what he's been up against but he's won in good style and it won't bother him whether it's Good or Soft. Bowman takes the ride from the good gate and I can see him measuring up. I'M A RIPPA had no hope after bombing the start last time out. Expect him to lead if he jumps cleanly, and if that's the case he'll be in it for a long way. He's never missed a place over track and distance from five starts. The one I'm terrified of is WITH A PROMISE for the Ben Currie stable. He's won two from four this prep and comes off a good win at Ipswich last week. On the quick back up here, will slide forward from barrier 10 and no surprises to see him win.

Tip: Double Superlative

Race 5

Looks a race in two here between RUDY and PEMBERLEY, who both come out of the Group 2 Brisbane Cup. On that occasion Rudy finished 5th and Pemberley finished 3rd, with 1.4L separating the two. Both rise 1kg in weight, but this will be a very different race to that one given there's only seven runners here, so Rudy may only be a few lengths off them at the top of the straight as opposed to the 10L off them he was in the Brisbane Cup. However, he still has to carry 5.5kg more than any other runner, and in a small field there may not be a lot of pace, so if it turns into a sit and sprint, he may get found out with the extra weight. We saw Pemberley settle closer last start, and I think he'll roll forward here from barrier 8; I actually wouldn't be surprised if he led. It's taken him a few runs to come good this prep but I think he's ready to win and if he has a few lengths on Rudy at the top of the straight with a 5.5kg weight advantage, I think he'll win. WAR BABY bolted in at Ipswich last start but is much better suited on a wet track, so MORENDI could be the value back on to a firm track at his preferred distance in easier grade.

Tip: Pemberley (Best Bet)

Race 6

I thought RELIGIFY was almost the bet of the year last start and he won with ease but I think this is a much harder task for him. He was the best weighted horse on the entire card last start but he jumps 3kg in weight here and has to lump 60.5kg. I think he can carry the weight, but I just think he's worth risking at the price today. He'll jump straight to the lead from the wide barrier but if he has to work at all early with that weight it could tell at the business end of the race. Having said all that, all the early money has been for him ($4 into $3.10). I'd prefer to be on MAN OF HIS WORD here at $3.70, and the way the market is going at this stage I think we'll even get $4 on the day. He was a horror watch if you backed him last start, held up the entire straight between horses while PAYROLL got the run on the inside and won the race. He's drawn to get a beautiful run from barrier 5 and I reckon Jeff Lloyd will be making sure he doesn't get snookered in today. Drops to 54.5kg so gets 6kg off Religify. Can win. As mentioned, PAYROLL won that race last start thanks to a freakish ride from Damien Oliver. Going to get a long way back again but does drop to 54kg. Her third up record isn't overly inspiring and I'd rather be on Man Of His Word. Value could be I'LL FLY AWAY for Darren Weir at 20/1.

Tip: Man Of His Word

Race 7

The price is all but gone but I'm strongly of the opinion that IN HER TIME has a leg on the rest of this field. I'd love to see them take her straight to the front from barrier 16 in order to negate the risk of being caught wide on speed again. Her two runs in Group 1 company this prep have been outstanding given the trip she's had in both, and that form is better than any other horse's in this race. If she gets to the front without a great deal of trouble, I think she wins. Having said that, there are a number of other horses that could win without surprising. The best value in the race is in DANISH TWIST and TYCOON TARA. Danish Twist resumed in Sydney with an unplaced effort but she typically improves sharply second up from a spell. She's one from one at this track and distance. Tycoon Tara is just starting to come good. From the gate I'd expect them to be right up on speed, possibly even leading. She wasn't beaten far in the Dane Ripper and the fact that Kerrin McEvoy sticks with her is a little bit of a hint. Drops in weight and receives a swing on those that beat her home last start, so at $26 she looks a big price. ECKSTEIN has claims after an impressive win last start at Eagle Farm. However it remains to be seen whether that can translate to a Good Doomben surface, and barrier 14 certainly won't see her get the run she got from barrier 1 last start. PROMPT RESPONSE, MISS GUNPOWDER, BONNY O'REILLY and NANCY are others worth considering.

Tip: In Her Time / Tycoon Tara EW

Race 8

DEPLOY isn't necessarily the best weighted horse here but he just finds a way to win and his form is too consistent to tip against him. He will get a great run in the race up on speed, likely outside the leader, and despite the 2kg weight swing in favour of Dothraki, I'd rather back a horse that continues to stick his head out and win when he sees the winning post! $3.60 is about right. UPSTART PRIDE is the one I'm terrified of. He bounced back to form last start behind Snitty Kitty and looks primed to run a big race here. I think the value is TOO GOOD TO REFUSE who comes out of a good race behind Miss Gunpowder. I think that formline is pretty good and the key with this horse is a Good track. The four runs before last start were all on wet ground, but his form on firm ground is decent. BURNING PASSION needs a wet track to be a winning chance in my opinion, and keep an eye on MOGADOR.

Tip: Deploy / Too Good To Refuse EW
