2017-18 A-League: Round 12 Preview & Betting Tips

December 21st 2017, 4:58pm, By: andyrosos

A 1-2 week in A-League betting brought an end to our extremely hot run of form in the Australian domestic competition. We are still running at 9/13 over the last four rounds though and will be looking to bounce back with another strong performance as we preview the Round 12 Christmas weekend slate below.

A-League Week 12 Betting Tips

Newcastle Jets vs Western Sydney Wanderers (Friday 7.50pm AEDT)

Newcastle continued their stellar start to the season last weekend, defeating Adelaide United at home 2-1 and face off against the Western Sydney Wanderers in another home game on Friday night. The Wanderers were impressive against Central Coast last week, earning a 2-0 victory to move to 8th on the table.

Newcastle have scored the most goals in the A-League season so far with 25 as star striker Roy O’Donovan has found the back of the net on seven occasions. O’Donovan is likely to be on the sidelines for the rest of the A-League season though, after a groin injury against Perth a few weeks ago.

Western Sydney are undefeated in their last seven games against the Jets, winning five of them in the process. However, it’s a completely different looking Newcastle side this season, one that plays with aggression and vigour. Even without O’Donovan in the lineup, we expect a great showing from the Jets here, especially at home, and we are back them at good odds.

TIP: Newcastle to win - $2.20 at Sportsbet

Wellington Phoenix vs Sydney FC (Saturday 5.35pm AEDT)

It’s bottom of the table hosting top of the table here as Sydney FC travel to New Zealand to take on the Wellington Phoenix. Wellington have won just one game so far this season while the Sky Blues have lost just one as they mount a strong case to be back to back premiers. Sydney FC have allowed just 9 goals through their 11 games, which is by far and away the best tally of any team, and their 23 goals for is second only to the Jets.

Wellington, on the other hand, are the only team in the league who have allowed more than 20 goals through the opening stages of the season, and sit last on the A-League table with just six points through 10 games. It’s been a tumultuous few years for the Phoenix, who could be in serious danger of losing their A-League license if something doesn’t turn around for them soon.

The Sydney clash just comes at the wrong time for Phoenix, who desperately need a win to stay in contact with Brisbane in 9th place. Unfortunately, we cant see that win coming this week given the way Sydney have been playing lately. Comparable to Manchester City in the Premier League, you just have to keep siding with them until they give you reason not to.

TIP: Sydney FC -1 - $2.60 at Ladbrokes

Melbourne City vs Melbourne Victory (Saturday 7.50pm AEDT)

The game of the round sees the two Melbourne teams go head to head in what should be an epic derby. Seldom do the two squads come into a derby with Melbourne City having all the form but even that hasn’t stopped the bookies from opening with the Victory as favourites here.

The Victory captured a great win over Brisbane away from home last weekend but haven’t really done much else to inspire confidence so far this season. Sure, they have been marred by injuries, suspension and international call up in the early parts of the season, but they definitely haven’t looked like the Victory of old, sitting 5th on the ladder with just 13 points through 11 games.

City will be looking to win back to back derby’s for the first time in A-League history, proving Victory’s dominance over recent years. There has only been one clean sheet kept in the last eight derbies between the two clubs and if history is anything to go by we should see at least 3 goals scored for the 10th time in 11 clashes here.

TIP: Total goals OVER 2.5 - $1.86 at CrownBet
