Caulfield Racing: 2016 Memsie Stakes Preview & Betting Tips

August 26th 2016, 6:25pm, By: tim_tips

It's a big day of racing at Caulfield on Saturday, August 27th as the huge Memsie Stakes headlines! We have horse racing tips for every race, including an extensive preview of the big one.

Caulfield Racing Tips – Saturday 27th August

Race 1 - Sebrikka
Race 2 - Tarquin
Race 3 - My Sister Lil / Majestic Lass
Race 4 - Black Vanquish
Race 5 - Under The Louvre
Race 6 - Highland Beat
Race 7 - Black Heart Bart
Race 8 - Tom Melbourne
Race 9 - Telopea

Best bet: Race 1 Sebrikka

Looks a hugely promising filly and one of the main hopes for the stable for the Thousand Guineas. Took forever to wind up last start but really knuckled down late which suggests to me the 1400m will be ideal. Drawn well, handy little claim and has trialed well leading into this. $3.00 available.

Best value: Race 4 Black Vanquish

I swore I would never back this again but he's had a throat operation during his time off and his recent jump out was very sharp. He has had talent since his first prep but it looks like he's had his issues. There's no price about him now ($21 into $8!) but that suggests the throat op may just have done the trick.

New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes 1400m

Fantastic card on offer at Caulfield on Saturday with the fast horses beginning to show their faces ahead of the Spring Racing Carnival.

Race 7 is the $500,000 Memsie Stakes, which is the first Group 1 of the new season, and we have a field of 14 set to line up over 1400m.

The Caulfield track is currently rated a Soft 5 but I would expect that to be upgraded to a Good 4 prior to the race.

Let's go through the runners:

PRINCE OF PENZANCE: Lining up for only his second start since winning the Melbourne Cup. His other start was highly impressive where he hit the line hard in a Group 3 over 1600m in Adelaide. 1400m will be too short for him, but look for him running on.

BLACK HEART BART: The Group 1 Goodwood winner looks very well placed on his return to the track here and the money has certainly come for him since markets opened. His record over 1400m is phenomenal, having only finished outside the top 2 once from 10 starts. Has form around Chautauqua, English and Under The Louvre, and 59kg won't worry him. Very hard to beat!

LORD OF THE SKY: Good win two starts back to win the Gr3 Bletchingly Stakes but was brought undone by the speed battle last start. Should find the front from barrier 1 here and if he gets things on his own terms he will run a big race in front. Each-way, but I've never been able to catch this horse.

CHARMED HARMONY: Disappointing last start in the Bletchingly after a tough run. Drawn to get a better run today from barrier 3 and has the blinkers back on, but looks up against it here.

HE OR SHE: Decent horse on his day but probably just below this level and he will be better over 1600m. Did win the Group 2 Blamey Stakes over The United States last prep, which turned out to be very good form. Could run a good race fresh but place prospects look best.

TASHBEEH: Good run first up in the Gr3 Aurie's Star last start behind Sooboog. Ran on strongly from the back and he will once again be forced back from barrier 14. Up to 59kg under WFA conditions here and his best will be over further than this and his 3rd up record is when he fires, so look to back him in something next start.

ALPINE EAGLE: Good to see him back at the track again. Has had a big wrap on him since day 1 but injuries have curtailed the hype somewhat. Only battled in his first start back from injury in May, but his work and trial in the lead up to this have been very encouraging. Blinkers go on for the first time here, and although he may be better over further than this, it wouldn't surprise me to see him feature in the finish.

MAHUTA: Appeared quite disappointing in the PB Lawrence Stakes last start but he did pull up lame so I'm prepared to forgive. Has four wins from five starts over this distance and from the good draw he is more than capable of bouncing back. Rawiller jumps off to ride Black Heart Bart, however, so that is a pretty good hint in itself.

TARZINO: Star stayer who is at his best over 2000m+ but he showed last prep that he can run well over this distance first up. From barrier 9 he will go back and hope there is a good tempo on out front. Should run well but will be at his best in his next few starts over 1600-2000m.

TAVAGO: Kiwi stayer who won the Group 1 Australian Derby during The Championships. The query is whether he is as good on firm tracks as he was on the wet track in Sydney, but he has performed well o Good tracks back in New Zealand. Is a Group 3 winner over 1600m so could show up, but prepared to watch him.

PALENTINO: The fourth of Weir's runners in the race. Was slightly below par when carrying a big weight at his first start back from a spell, but he does tend to improve after his first up runs. Group 3 winner over this distance and a Group 1 winner over 1600m so with a run under his belt I expect him to be thereabouts.

TALLY: Improved with every run last campaign which resulted in two Group 2 wins and a 3rd place finish in the Group 1 Australian Derby behind Tavago. Will go back from barrier 13 and may need the run, look out for him when he gets over a bit more ground.

RISING ROMANCE: Hayes gave her a big wrap ahead of this run, saying she looks the best she ever has and he expects her to run a big race. Generally takes one or two runs to hit her straps and her best is typically over 2000m, but from the gun draw she will box seat and get absolutely every chance to cause a boilover.

SOFIA ROSA: Impressive Kiwi mare that came to Australia and won the Group 1 Australian Oaks during The Championships. Has won three from four when first up but the 1400m should prove a bit too sharp for her. Really like the look of her for future staying races, though!

Summary

Weir holds a very strong hand here with Black Heart Bart, Palentino and Mahuta all with very strong claims. Rawiller chooses to ride Group 1 Goodwood winner Black Heart Bart and it's easy to see why. His record over 1400m is outstanding and if he reproduces his form from last prep he'll be winning this.

Very keen to see Alpine Eagle return here. The 1400m may be a bit slick but he's been pretty sharp leading into this and I'm expecting a good performance. The same can be said about Tarzino ad Prince Of Penzance, while Lord Of The Sky will give a bold sight from the inside gate.

Plenty of horses to keep an eye on going forward!

1st BLACK HEART BART
2nd MAHUTA
3rd PALENTINO
4th TARZINO

Rosehill Racing Tips – Saturday 27th August

Race 1 - My Giuliano
Race 2 - Antonio Giuseppe
Race 3 - Evacuation
Race 4 - Moss My Name EW
Race 5 - Allez Chival
Race 6 - Snoopy
Race 7 - Mediterranean
Race 8 - Singing
Race 9 - We're Sure

Best bet: Race 8 Singing

Really liked the effort from this European import first up in Australia. Carried 60kg and cruised up to win but just ran out of gas late, which is understandable when he was first up over 1900m with the big weight. The big danger here is the Godolphin horse Allergic who will be very hard to beat, but this horse is Group 2 placed behind Protectionist and could be very smart.

Best value: Race 4 Moss My Name

Tough race with plenty of chances but this horse has trialed well leading into this and looks like a mudlark so the wet track should suit her. Carries just the 51kg and despite the wide barrier she looks a decent price at $12.
